Karan Johar Becomes A Walking Raja Ravi Varma Exhibit In 6-Foot Hand-painted Cape For His Met Debut

Karan Johar didn’t just get the memo for his Met Gala debut, he clearly ghostwrote it decades ago. How else does a first-timer walk in and instantly set the entire room talking?

Okay, wait. Did Karan Johar wear the art, or did the art wear Karan Johar? Because that cape was not giving fashion moment, it was giving full-blown museum installation, and I am not even slightly calm about it.

Karan Johar Makes His Met Gala Debut

Let me be quite frank. I did not have high hopes for KJo on that iconic staircase. The man loves a bold print and a fun colour, sure, but silhouette risks? Not historically his thing. Safe, structured, reliably dapper, always. He rarely picks something boundary-pushing, if you ask me. So imagine my face when he walked up those Met steps looking like a Raja Ravi Varma masterpiece brought to life for the occasion. My jaw hit the floor and it is still there, somewhere on the carpet.

Here is the thing though. Of course Karan Johar showed up with a story to tell. The man has spent thirty years making films about feelings for a living. A quietly cool tuxedo was never going to happen, and honestly, thank goodness for that. What did happen was a sharply power-shouldered vintage-style jacket paired with a nearly six-foot hand-painted cape that moved like something you would frame, light dramatically, and charge admission to see. Designed by Manish Malhotra and styled by Eka Lakhani, the ensemble pulled directly from some of Varma’s most celebrated works including Hamsa Damayanti, Kadambari, and Arjuna and Subhadra, weaving zardozi borders, three-dimensional lotus and swan motifs, and sculpted pillars across every inch of the look. And if that were not enough, even the jacket lining carried hidden hand-painted artwork inside it. Immersive is a serious understatement.

Karan Johar’s Met Gala Look Was Inspired By Raja Ravi Varma

Before you breeze past any of that, stop and actually let it register. The embroideries were treated with acrylic and oil finishes and then varnished, so the fabric holds the same luminous glow as an actual oil painting. The borders were built on rubberised bases layered with zardozi so they physically rise off the textile the way thick paint rises off canvas. This was not embellishment for the sake of looking expensive. This was the full replication of one art form through a completely different medium. Absolutely unhinged, and I mean that as the highest compliment possible.

Everything You Need To Know About Karan Johar’s Met Gala Look

The whole thing took a team of artisans 5,600 hours across 86 days to bring to life. Sit with that number for a moment. Eighty six days of human hands, human patience, human skill, all so Karan Johar could walk up a staircase in New York and make the rest of the red carpet feel slightly underdressed.

Karan completed the look with pieces from his own jewellery label Tyaani, bold multi-stone rings and a statement necklace that added the right kind of weight without crowding the cape’s moment.

Smart choice. The cape was already delivering a full monologue.

What makes this story even richer is that the concept came from Karan himself. Stylist Eka Lakhani revealed on Instagram that he was the one who brought Raja Ravi Varma to the table, and honestly, it tracks completely. She wrote, “The idea of drawing from Raja Ravi Varma’s work came from Karan himself, but it also felt deeply personal to me. He was the first artist I ever studied when I began my journey in costume design. With Manish’s craftsmanship and Karan’s instinctive love for art, we brought together inspirations from some of Varma’s most celebrated works…Hamsa Damayanti, Kadambari, and Arjuna and Subhadra, among others.”

And Karan, sharing the look on Instagram, wrote, “Raja Ravi Varma felt right because his work does something I’ve always tried to do in cinema. He painted feelings.” He also thanked his friend and fashion designer Manish Malhotra for bringing his vision to life. He penned, “To bring our Indian culture to the global stage with the vision of couture and gratitude woven together is an art form in itself, which he has mastered. You made me feel like a canvas for your art, thank you!”

Fashion is art, they said. Karan Johar took notes, showed up, and left no argument standing.
