There was a time when the world decided that straight lines were terribly exciting. This was the age of Art Deco, a design movement that took geometry, symmetry, and unapologetic elegance and turned them into a statement. Buildings became sharper, cars became sleeker, and naturally, timepieces followed suit. Gone were the purely round, traditional forms. In came rectangles and squares, shapes that looked modern, confident, and just a little bit rebellious. But here is the clever bit. Fast forward to today, and Frederique Constant has decided to revisit this golden age with the Classics Carrée Moonphase Automatic, a timepiece that does not merely borrow from Art Deco, it embraces it wholeheartedly, then adds a touch of celestial theatre for good measure.

The Classics Carrée line has long been one of the brand’s more recognisable offerings, known for its rectangular case and understated elegance. Previously, it leaned on familiar complications like the date or the rather charming Heart Beat aperture. Launched in 2025, this watch has a rectangular case measuring 42.3mm gets a stainless steel case, lugs, and an onion crown at 3 o’clock with polished surfaces.

The navy blue dial feature a chevron guilloché pattern that plays with light like finely woven fabric, finished with a delicate sunray effect. The moonphase is placed at 6 o’clock has a crescent shaped aperture revealing the waxing and waning of the moon against a starry backdrop. On the blue dial, the contrast of a grey moon and stars against the midnight canvas is particularly striking.

The display tracks the moon’s cycle with remarkable fidelity, progressing through its phases over 27 days, 7 hours, 43 minutes, and 12 seconds. There are twelve faceted hour markers with dauphine hour, minute, and second hands, polished to a mirror finish, and the sector style minute track frames the dial. Turn the timepiece over, and wearers are greeted by a sapphire open caseback with a view of the central rotor revealing the FC-333 automatic calibre offering a 38-hour power reserve. The watch is finished on a blue calf leather with crocodile pattern with a pin buckle.
