Russian President Vladimir Putin recently described Elon Musk as a “genius”, praising his achievement in deploying thousands of satellites into orbit through SpaceX’s Starlink network. Speaking during an exhibition visit in Moscow on October 28, Putin contrasted the scale of Musk’s satellite constellation with Russia’s early efforts to develop a competing system. While the remark brought renewed attention to the billionaire’s influence in the technology and space industries, Musk’s public image is equally recognisable for another reason: his distinctive approach to personal dressing.
Unlike business leaders who favour sharply tailored suits and carefully coordinated formalwear, Musk often gravitates towards a more relaxed wardrobe. His choices reflect a preference for comfort, practicality and statement-making casual pieces, giving his public appearances a recognisable visual identity.

A black T-shirt, dark jeans and comfortable footwear form a recurring combination in Musk’s wardrobe. The simplicity of these pieces is a departure from the traditional executive uniform, where formal shirts, structured jackets and polished shoes are often expected.

Musk frequently appears in crew-neck T-shirts, sometimes layered under a blazer or jacket, creating a look that moves between casual and business settings.
His preference for uncomplicated dressing has also drawn attention to the idea of a personal uniform. Rather than frequently experimenting with silhouettes or seasonal trends, Musk tends to return to familiar staples. The result is a consistent appearance that is easy to recognise across interviews, public events and photographs.

Graphic and slogan-led T-shirts are another recurring feature of Musk’s style. References to his companies, technology and personal interests have appeared on his clothing.

Such clothing includes designs bearing phrases such as ‘Occupy Mars’, ‘Tech Support’ and ‘Dogefather’. These pieces introduce an element of personal expression into an otherwise understated wardrobe.

Baseball caps have also become part of his public image, particularly during political appearances and campaign events.

At rallies, he has paired dark caps with T-shirts and jackets, favouring an informal combination over conventional political dressing. His description of himself as ‘Dark MAGA’ at a 2024 campaign rally further brought attention to the darker, graphic-led aesthetic he adopted during that period.

Musk does wear conventional formal clothing when the occasion calls for it. Tailored suits and jackets have featured at state functions, international meetings and other formal engagements. However, these appearances sit alongside a much more casual everyday wardrobe, rather than defining it.

His dressing style may not follow the conventional rules of executive elegance, but its consistency has made it distinctive. Whether he is wearing a slogan T-shirt at a public appearance or a suit for a formal engagement, Musk tends to favour recognisable, uncomplicated choices over elaborate styling. His personal style, much like his public persona, rarely goes unnoticed.
