A look At Kendall Jenner’s Car Collection

There are celebrity car collections, and then there is Kendall Jenner’s. The former usually involves a predictable procession of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and enormous SUVs, all selected because they are expensive enough to make a reasonable person briefly question their life choices. Jenner’s garage is rather more interesting. It has modern supercars, yes, but also manual Porsches, old American icons, vintage off roaders, classic trucks and some wonderfully eccentric choices. For the car girls, she is beginning to look less like a celebrity with nice cars and more like the person whose garage you would happily use as your Pinterest board.

The star of the collection appears to be a 1997 Porsche 993 Carrera 4S, finished in black and equipped with the thing that makes modern enthusiasts increasingly misty eyed: a manual gearbox. The 993 is already regarded as one of the most desirable generations of the Porsche 911, being the final naturally aspirated, air cooled 911. Add four wheel drive, the wide bodywork of the Carrera 4S and a manual transmission, and you have something considerably more interesting than a fashionable driveway ornament.

It is also reportedly the car Jenner drives most frequently, which might be the biggest compliment of all. Anyone can own something spectacular. Actually choosing the old Porsche when there are newer and more powerful machines sitting around it suggests that she understands the point of collecting cars.

Then there is the Porsche 992 Turbo S Cabriolet, which takes the recipe in precisely the opposite direction. It is silver on the outside, paired with a brown interior and matching soft top, and is essentially the automotive equivalent of turning up to lunch in a perfectly tailored outfit without looking as though you tried too hard. The Turbo S brings ferocious performance, but the convertible body gives it a little more glamour. Because apparently 911 ownership can be both terrifyingly fast and perfectly accessorised. If there is one recurring theme in Jenner’s garage, however, it is brown.

Her former Ferrari SF90 Stradale was reportedly finished in brown inside and out, while her Lamborghini Urus wears a matte brown finish. Even a classic Land Rover follows the same earthy colour philosophy. It is an unusually restrained approach to a celebrity garage, where bright yellow, red and fluorescent green are normally considered perfectly reasonable choices. Brown, in Jenner’s hands, somehow becomes a signature.

But the collection gets considerably more interesting when you move away from modern machinery. Jenner owns several American classics, including a Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvette. These are not cars selected because they are particularly sensible. They are cars with attitude, history and the mechanical charm that made American performance cars cultural objects long before Instagram existed.

And then there is the lilac Cadillac Eldorado from the 1960s. Because if you are going to own a classic Cadillac, there is little point pretending you want to blend into the traffic. The Eldorado is enormous, flamboyant and wonderfully excessive, exactly the sort of machine that makes today’s luxury SUVs look slightly apologetic.

Her collection also demonstrates that Jenner’s automotive interests extend beyond sports cars. She has an 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser restored by Corsetti Cruisers, bringing proper old school off road credibility into the mix. Alongside it sit two 1965 Chevrolet C10 pickups, which are about as far removed from the sleek lines of a modern Porsche as you can possibly get while remaining four wheeled and petrol powered.

Yet perhaps the most fascinating cars in the collection are her Mercedes-Benz G500 Cabriolets. One is a 2014 Final Edition, finished in dark blue with a beige soft top. The other is silver, giving Jenner not one but two examples of a vehicle that Mercedes itself no longer produces in anything like the same form. The G500 Cabriolet combines the blunt, military inspired proportions of the G Class with the slightly absurd luxury of being able to remove the roof. It is difficult to think of a more entertaining contradiction. And that, ultimately, is what makes Jenner’s collection so appealing.

It isn’t simply about horsepower or price tags. There is a discernible personality running through it. The Porsche 993 suggests an appreciation for analogue driving. The American classics bring nostalgia. The Land Cruiser and C10s add utility and character. The G500 Cabriolets provide eccentricity, while the carefully chosen brown and earthy finishes give the whole garage a surprising degree of cohesion. Most celebrity garages are exercises in excess.
