There was a time, if someone suggested that the next great luxury car would come from China, you’d have laughed so hard you’d have spilled your single malt onto the Connolly leather seats of your Bentley. Chinese cars, we were told, were cheap, cheerful and about as desirable as instant coffee at The Ritz. Then they quietly became the world’s largest builders of electric cars while everyone else was still arguing about charging cables. BYD has already embarrassed plenty of established manufacturers by building EVs faster than they can hold board meetings. Now it has decided that merely making electric cars isn’t ambitious enough. It wants to build something for people who don’t drive to work but are driven there. A car where the rear seat matters more than the steering wheel, and where silence is every bit as valuable as speed. Meet the Denza D9, a luxury electric MPV that could make India’s established premium brands rather uncomfortable.
The D9 Marks BYD’s Biggest Luxury Move Yet

BYD is preparing to introduce its premium sub brand Denza to India, with the D9 executive MPV leading the company’s luxury ambitions. Sources indicate the launch is being targeted around Diwali 2026, although any delays could see the debut shift to the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in February 2027. If the festive launch proceeds as planned, the mobility show will likely serve as the platform for introducing Denza’s wider Indian portfolio. Rather than extending BYD’s existing product line, Denza is expected to establish itself as a standalone luxury marque, signalling the Chinese manufacturer’s most ambitious move yet into India’s premium automotive market.

Finding The Sweet Spot In India’s Luxury MPV Segment

The Denza D9 has been carefully positioned to occupy a gap that scarcely existed until now. Sitting above the MG M9, priced at ₹79.95 lakh, yet comfortably below the Toyota Vellfire, which commands between ₹1.20 crore and ₹1.30 crore, and the Lexus LM, which stretches from ₹2.20 crore to ₹2.75 crore, the D9 is expected to arrive at around ₹90 lakh. This positioning gives BYD an opportunity to offer executive luxury and electric mobility without entering the ultra luxury price bracket, creating an appealing proposition for buyers seeking a chauffeur driven EV with genuine premium credentials.
Electric Power Takes Priority

Globally, the Denza D9 is offered with both fully electric and plug in hybrid powertrains, but India is expected to receive the battery electric version first. The decision is largely driven by taxation, as pure electric vehicles benefit from a favourable 5 percent GST, making them significantly easier to price competitively than plug in hybrids. The electric D9 offers an impressive NEDC certified range of up to 600 kilometres, while a 10 minute fast charging session can add approximately 150 kilometres of driving range. Despite being a large executive MPV, it accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in just 6.9 seconds, proving that luxury and brisk performance can comfortably coexist.

Luxury Extends Beyond The Vehicle

Initially, the Denza D9 is expected to arrive as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), allowing BYD to assess demand before considering local production. Equally significant is the company’s reported plan to establish dedicated Denza retail outlets, separating the luxury brand from BYD’s existing network that currently sells the Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7, and eMax 7. For buyers spending close to ₹90 lakh, the showroom experience, personalised service and after sales support are as important as the vehicle itself, and BYD appears determined to create a premium ownership journey from day one.
The Real Challenge Lies Beyond Technology

The executive MPV segment is evolving rapidly. The MG M9 has introduced an electric alternative, while the Toyota Vellfire and Lexus LM continue to dominate the luxury end of the market. The Denza D9 enters this space with competitive pricing, impressive range and strong technological credentials, but winning over buyers will require far more than an excellent product. Luxury customers invest in trust, reputation and ownership experience as much as engineering. If BYD can deliver the service standards expected in this segment, the Denza D9 has every opportunity to become one of the most compelling luxury electric vehicles to arrive in India. If not, even 600 kilometres of range may not be enough to bridge the credibility gap.
