Cultural Pride And Panache: How Shah Rukh Khan And Diljit Dosanjh Represented India At The Met Gala 2025

The royalty of Indian music and film, dressed in black silk jackets and ivory sherwanis, brought strikingly distinct visions of style, masculinity, and tradition to the Met Gala red carpet. Here's breaking down their look for you

The world stage surrendered to South Asian beauty at this year’s Met Gala when two cultural giants, Shah Rukh Khan and Diljit Dosanjh, gave remarkably different but equally powerful renditions of the evening’s theme, “Tailored For You”.

Diljit Dosanjh: A Maharaja Moment in Modern Couture

Diljit Dosanjh didn’t just show up for his first Met Gala debut; he arrived as royalty. Styled to perfection by Abhilasha Devnani, Dosanjh channelled the grandeur of Punjab’s regal history while wearing a custom Prabal Gurung. An ivory and gold sherwani and tehmat (similar to a lungi) were part of the ensemble, a masterwork of precise craftsmanship and cultural respect. A cloak embroidered with a silhouetted map of Punjab flapped behind him like a banner of sovereignty.

The feathered turban, rich in meaning and bejewelled with a brooch, crowned the ensemble. A stunning homage to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh’s famous Patiala necklace, made by Golecha’s Jewels, evoked royal gravitas around his neck. Poetic elegance and unmistakable force were complemented by a Panthère de Cartier watch, elaborate Cartier bracelets, and a lion-headed kirpan, which was Dosanjh’s stylish take on the traditional walking stick.

Diljit Dosanjh's Met Gala look was inspired by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, the former King of Patiala.

But more than luxury, Dosanjh’s appearance conveyed a tale of pride, tradition, and rebirth. He redefined what modern masculinity could look like on the most dramatic night in fashion by combining the brazen elegance of Black Dandyism with the regality of South Asian ethnicity. “It’s all about carrying your identity with pride, right?” he told The New York Times. And he carried it with the swagger of a sovereign.

Shah Rukh Khan: The Power of Restraint

Shah Rukh Khan opted for a hushed, powerful whisper, while Dosanjh let forth a shout of ornamental grandeur. Khan, dressed in Sabyasachi, glided into the Met steps without much hoopla. His polished, floor-length Tasmanian superfine wool coat, black crepe de Chine silk shirt and structured kamarbandh were the epitome of elegance in terms of proportion and silhouette.

It was the intimacy of his look that made it unique. Personal mythology was revealed through layered talismanic chains, a diamond brooch, and a crystal “K” pendant. The pièce de résistance? An 18k gold Bengal Tiger Head Cane with exquisite stones on it, a silent declaration of power in his hands.

Khan garnered a poetic edge from Sabyasachi’s nod to Black Dandy tailoring customs and Indian court dress. This style had its roots in royal simplicity and movie legends. SRK’s aura was sufficient; no train or dramatic embellishment was required. All his clothing did was bend to it.

Who Wore It Best?

Comparing the restrained majesty of Shah Rukh Khan to the dramatic splendour of Diljit Dosanjh is really like comparing a coup to a coronation. Dosanjh anchored culture in fashion while dazzled with extravaganza. A masterful depiction of the concept of less is more, Khan subdued with finesse.

One allowed his legacy to influence the outfit, while the other engraved his legacy into each diamond. One reverberated where the other raged. Who’s dressed the best? Which do you appreciate more, the whisper of timelessness or the roar of tradition? Either way, South Asia reigned supreme at Met Gala 2025.
