Halloween may be over, but some of its most talked-about transformations are still making their rounds on social media. Leading the conversation, once again, is German-American supermodel and television personality Heidi Klum, whose annual Halloween costumes have become an event in their own right. This year, she had fans guessing through a series of cryptic clues before revealing something nobody quite saw coming. At her 25th annual Halloween party in New York, Klum transformed herself into a giant, severed replica of her own left hand.

Her Halloween appearances have become as much about the creative process as the final reveal. Elaborate prosthetics, painstaking makeup applications and collaborations with special-effects artists have helped her turn seemingly impossible ideas into wearable creations. The latest look continued that tradition, drawing attention to the craftsmanship and technical work involved in bringing an unusual concept to life.

Clues Behind Transformation

Known for keeping her Halloween plans under wraps until the last possible moment, Klum gave her followers plenty to speculate about in the days leading up to October 31. Close-up glimpses of flesh-like textures and grotesque details offered little clarity, with each social media post revealing another piece of the puzzle. On October 30, she shared her final clue, featuring an unsettling close-up of a mouth and teeth, accompanied by a promise to reveal the look the following day. The eventual reveal was every bit as unexpected as her followers had hoped.

At her Halloween celebration, Klum appeared as an oversized, bloodied hand, complete with elongated red nails, intricate palm lines, visible veins and rings. Her face emerged from the wrist area, with blood dripping from her mouth and only her eyes and mouth visible. The costume also featured replicas of her engagement ring, wedding band and a tattoo of her husband Tom Kaulitz’s name on her ring finger. The latter detail gave the otherwise gruesome creation a personal touch.

The Artists Behind Magic

The transformation was brought to life by special-effects artist Mike Marino and his team at ProRenFX, who have collaborated with Klum on several of her most memorable Halloween appearances. Using scans of her actual hand as a reference, the team recreated its anatomy, including the muscles, veins and finer details. The oversized structure also required considerable planning and engineering to allow Klum to fit inside it and move around. The creative process took months, while getting into the costume alone required approximately five to six hours. Its considerable weight also made carrying it one of the biggest challenges.

Marino’s work has been central to Klum’s Halloween transformations over the years. Her 2022 worm costume, which saw her arrive at her party on a fishing line held by Kaulitz, was another creation by Marino and his team. The following year, she became a giant blue peacock, surrounded by Cirque du Soleil performers who formed its elaborate feather train.

Two Decades of Transformations

Klum’s Halloween archive reads like a catalogue of elaborate characters and special-effects artistry. She donned Goddess Kali in 2008, an anatomical representation of the human body in 2011, an elderly woman in 2013 and a colourful butterfly in 2014.

Her 2017 Teen Wolf transformation brought a hairy, werewolf-inspired appearance, while 2018 saw her become Fiona from Shrek, with husband Tom Kaulitz appearing as Shrek himself.

Her subsequent transformations continued to push the boundaries of costume design. In 2022, she arrived as a giant earthworm, followed by a larger-than-life peacock in 2023. The year 2024 saw her transform into E.T., the iconic extraterrestrial character, while her 2025 appearance as Medusa drew inspiration from Greek mythology.

Each character brought a different creative challenge, allowing Klum and her collaborators to explore prosthetics, body transformations and elaborate costume construction.

Over the years, Klum has turned Halloween into a showcase of imagination, craftsmanship and special-effects artistry. Her costumes have become annual talking points, with audiences just as curious about the creative process as they are about the eventual reveal.
