Is Alia Bhatt The New Queen Of Cannes?

Alia Bhatt showed up to the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and immediately made it her moment. Two looks in, and the internet has already decided she belongs there

There’s a reason Indian actresses at Cannes feel like a whole cultural institution at this point. Aishwarya Rai spent decades making the French Riviera feel like it was specifically invented for her – that particular combination of grace and authority that made every appearance feel less like a press obligation and more like a coronation. Priyanka Chopra arrived and proved it wasn’t a one-woman show, that Indian women could work that red carpet with the same ease as anyone who’d grown up being told they belonged there. What both of them did, consistently, was make space. And now Alia Bhatt and her generation are walking into a room their predecessors built, which sounds like an advantage until you realise how much heavier that expectation actually is. Alia’s Cannes run suggests she’s not just aware of that weight, she’s figured out how to wear it.

Alia Bhatt’s Tribute To The French Riviera

Alia’s first look wasn’t an outfit so much as a love letter. Designer Yash Patil constructed a custom corset gown with a structured bodice, angular cups, a drop waist, and a voluminous skirt made of ombre-dyed silk organza and tulle, all nodding hard to the silhouettes of the 1950s. But what tipped it from beautiful into genuinely unforgettable was what artist Basuri Chokshi did to the fabric itself. Hand-painted scenes of the French Riviera directly onto the gown. Lavender fields, dreamy coastal landscapes, the kind of imagery that makes you feel like you’re looking at a watercolour from a Provençal postcard. Wearable art isn’t a phrase that gets thrown around lightly, but this one earned it.

The styling knew better than to compete. Chopard yellow diamonds worked with the pastel palette rather than against it, and Manolo Blahnik mules closed out the look in the most elegant way possible.

Alia Bhatt’s Red Carpet Moment

For her official red carpet walk as a L’Oréal Paris ambassador, Alia switched gears entirely and arrived in a blush-toned strapless gown by Tamara Ralph. The structured corset bodice did all the heavy lifting in terms of drama, but the real showstopper was a dupatta-style drape wrapped around her arms, a very desi reference tucked into an otherwise Western silhouette.

Alia Bhatt further celebrated Indian craftsmanship by accessorising her ensemble with an exquisite high-jewellery piece from Amrapali. She wore The Golconda Rosé, a spectacular necklace featuring 168.27 carats of rare pink coral and a striking 5.53-carat Golconda Type IIa diamond at its centre, complemented by over 20 carats of diamonds.

Why This Matters Beyond The Fashion

There’s a pattern worth noticing here. Alia’s daytime look was a custom creation that functioned as cultural storytelling – an Indian designer, an Indian artist, all celebrating a French setting on the world’s most-watched stage. Her red carpet gown quietly wove in a desi reference without making it the whole point. Neither look was screaming for attention, and yet both are all anyone’s talking about.

That balance, between spectacle and intention, between fashion and identity, is what the best Cannes appearances have always gotten right. Aishwarya understood it. Priyanka understood it. Alia, two looks into her second Cannes appearance, is already fluent in it.

Who Else Is At Cannes 2026

The Indian contingent at this year’s festival is notably large. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be back in her L’Oréal Paris ambassador capacity, as expected. Karan Johar is attending, as is filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, who joins as part of India’s official delegation in his role with the International Film Festival of India. Tara Sutaria, Mouni Roy, and Pooja Batra are also at the Riviera this year. The festival runs May 12 through May 23.

A Quick Look Back: Alia’s Cannes 2025 Debut

For context, Alia’s Cannes 2025 debut featured a custom Gucci ensemble that drew inspiration from the sari – another instance of that same instinct to blend, rather than choose between, her two worlds. It was very well-received.

This year, she’s gone further. Two looks in, one more week of festival to go. The expectations are set embarrassingly high now, but something suggests that’s exactly where Alia likes them.
