Every so often the world of luxury motoring produces something so gloriously, wonderfully specific that you have to read the press release twice just to be sure you haven’t misunderstood it. This is one of those moments. Bentley, in collaboration with its bespoke division Mulliner and its Warsaw retailer, has built a three-car collection for Poland dedicated to Nicolaus Copernicus, the sixteenth-century polymath who had the extraordinary temerity to suggest that the sun, rather than mankind, might be the centre of the universe. It took the Catholic Church several centuries to fully come around to his way of thinking. It has taken Bentley considerably less time to turn his life’s work into three extremely fast, extremely expensive Grand Tourers, which feels like exactly the sort of thing that should happen more often.
The three cars, based on the sporting Continental GT S and GTC S, are named Sun, Earth and Moon, and what unites them, aside from a shared engineering platform and a general disregard for expense, is something Bentley calls the “Copernicus Diagram”: an eight-piece orbital motif depicting Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, worked into the centre console, the front and rear quilting panels, the welcome lamps and the tonneau cover. It is, in other words, a solar system stitched into leather, which is either the height of automotive whimsy or the most elegant homage a car company has paid to an astronomer, and I rather think it might be both.

The Sun car, a Continental GTC S convertible, arrives in a Manuka Orange so vivid it could plausibly be mistaken for the star itself, paired with a Gravity Grey secondary hide and orange main hide elements. Copper Stone veneer runs across the dashboard and door waistrails, joined by orange stitching and carpet binding, the whole effect rather like sitting inside a very tasteful sunset.
Earth, based on the coupe Continental GT S, goes the obvious but no less handsome route with a bespoke Nebula Blue exterior. Inside, Imperial Blue serves as the secondary hide against an Aegean Blue main hide, wrapped around the dashboard, seat bolsters and headrests, with Galaxy Stone veneer, chrome trim and silver contrast piping adding depth. A satin-painted Imperial Blue centre console finishes the theme, which is to say Bentley has managed to make an entire car feel like the view from a very good window seat on a very long flight.
Moon, the third car and another Continental GT S coupe, takes the more restrained route, finished in a bespoke Moonstruck silver that mimics the lunar surface with more subtlety than you’d expect from a car company describing a planet. The interior pairs dark Beluga leather with lighter Ice leather highlights across the seats, centre console, dashboard and door inlays, achieving something closer to moonlight than moon rock, which is the correct choice.

Underneath all this celestial theming sits Bentley’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain, producing 671bhp and paired with a titanium sports exhaust that, I imagine, makes a noise entirely unbefitting of a car dedicated to quiet scholarly achievement. Each car rides on the standard active chassis and 22-inch Ten Swept Spoke wheels finished in gloss black, with carbon ceramic brakes on hand for when the laws of physics, much like the laws of astronomy, need to be firmly reasserted.
And then, because this is Bentley and restraint was clearly optional, each car comes with bespoke treadplates, an individual fragrance, a matching key box, Mulliner overmats, and pocket squares and scarves inspired by the collection. There is even, I am delighted to report, a dedicated Spotify playlist, presumably for those moments when you want your car, your cologne and your background music to be thematically consistent with a heliocentric model of the universe.
Is any of this strictly necessary? Of course not. Copernicus, so far as history records, never once complained about the pocket square situation. But that has never really been the point of Mulliner’s bespoke programme, and it certainly isn’t the point here. This is Bentley demonstrating, with three cars and one very good idea, that craftsmanship, done properly, can turn even a five-hundred-year-old astronomical theory into something you can drive at considerable speed. Copernicus moved the earth. Bentley has simply given it somewhere very comfortable to sit.
