Wes Anderson Returns With Montblanc: A Cinematic Ode To Writing And Imagination

Montblanc and visionary filmmaker Wes Anderson reunite for a whimsical second short film celebrating the magic of storytelling, creativity, and the enduring allure of travel

June 27, 2025

Montblanc continues its creative journey with Wes Anderson in a captivating new short film titled Let’s Write, a second installment following the widely celebrated centennial tribute to the Maison’s iconic Meisterstück writing instrument. The acclaimed filmmaker once again applies his signature storytelling style — marked by symmetry, dry wit, and surreal charm — to explore Montblanc’s rich legacy of writing, creativity, and the romanticism of travel.

Building on the whimsical world introduced in the previous campaign, Let’s Write takes viewers back to the Montblanc Observatory High-Mountain Library — a fantastical, snow-cloaked setting nestled above the clouds. Inhabited by a trio of quirky mountaineers portrayed by Wes Anderson himself, Rupert Friend, and Michael Cera, the library becomes a stage for musings that blend philosophical introspection with clever brand integration. Joining them is frequent Anderson collaborator Waris Ahluwalia and emerging talent Esther McGregor, rounding out the film’s distinctively Andersonian cast.

The narrative continues to blur the lines between fiction and product, weaving in Montblanc’s dedication to the written word. Viewers are guided through scenes that reflect on writing as both a literal act and a metaphor for self-expression. The journey expands with the introduction of a new surreal setting: the Montblanc Voyage of Panorama — a theatrical train car rolling through imagined terrains. As Anderson’s character eloquently puts it, the Panorama train illustrates “the idea of the literal, metaphorical and poetic ‘journey’.” Each stop along this dreamlike voyage invites viewers to pause, reflect, and write — a direct nod to Montblanc’s timeless philosophy.

The film effortlessly incorporates Montblanc’s products into the storyline, spotlighting key pieces such as the new Montblanc Writing Traveler Bag, the iconic Meisterstück pen, and the “SCHREIBERLING” fountain pen — a piece conceptualized by Anderson himself. Other featured objects include a Portable Writing Table and a historic Minerva pocket watch, all seamlessly integrated into the narrative to reflect the Maison’s ethos of function, luxury, and storytelling.

Commenting on the creative synergy, Montblanc Artistic Director Marco Tomasetta said, “Montblanc has such an extraordinary, rich heritage and DNA; an endless source of creative material and stories to be discovered and told. In Wes Anderson, we have found the perfect narrator, offering an original lens through which people can discover our Maison.”

The film’s creative impact, however, extends beyond the screen. “Anderson’s style defies traditional notions of luxury storytelling,” explains Stephanie Radl, Montblanc Global Director of Brand Relations and Communications. “The short film will stop viewers in their tracks… it encourages them to interact with the brand very differently.” The campaign aims to reawaken curiosity for the written word while reinforcing Montblanc’s identity as a house of craftsmanship, creativity, and innovation.

To realise this cinematic vision, Anderson collaborated with long-time creative partner Roman Coppola, who served as co-director and directed additional short-form content. The film also brought together a powerhouse team including producers Jeremy Dawson and John Peet, director of photography Darius Khondji, production designers Adam Stockhausen and Stephan Gessler, and costume designer Milena Canonero — all contributing to the campaign’s richly stylised aesthetic.

Complementing the film is a visual campaign shot by Charlie Gray, featuring Anderson’s cast alongside Montblanc Global Brand Ambassadors Jing Boran, Xin Zhilei, Joey King, and Daniel Brühl. These campaign visuals will continue to roll out across upcoming chapters, reinforcing the brand’s global creative language.
