Known for designing some of Mumbai’s most high-profile celebrity homes, Gauri Khan’s latest design venture is close to her heart. Nestled amid the pine-clad slopes of Dalhousie, The Chestnut Grove is not merely another luxury property; it is a deeply nostalgic return to Khan’s childhood.
The six-bedroom villa belongs to Khan’s maternal uncle, Tejinder Tiwari, and holds decades of family memories. It was here that Khan spent long summer holidays with her cousins, surrounded by crisp mountain air and unhurried days. Today, she has tastefully redesigned the estate as an exclusive retreat for travellers.

“I wanted a winter home in the hills that felt easy, warm, and lived-in. This is it! Now open to be experienced,” writes Gauri Khan on her Instagram handle, sharing a video of The Chestnut Grove.
Gauri Khan’s Dalhousie home’s story dates back to 1933, when it was bought by Gauri’s great-grandfather, Suraj Bhan Tiwari. Over the decades, it became a sentimental cornerstone for the family. Gauri’s mother, Savita Chibba, and her uncle Tejinder grew up considering it a second home. To ensure the redesign respected family legacy, Gauri collaborated with her cousin, Rustam Tiwari.

Their shared memories shaped the vision: retain the warmth and character of the original house while seamlessly introducing contemporary comforts. The intention was never to create a typical hotel, but rather to add a personal, cosy touch while making it a luxury villa.

Spread across approximately 8,000 square feet, the villa features a mountain charm with contemporary refinement. Its striking glass façade allows uninterrupted views of the surrounding forest, and by night, the illuminated structure glows softly against the hillsides. Inside, the aesthetic leans toward understated, cosy luxury. A generous fireplace anchors the living room, complemented by plush seating designed for long conversations. The bedrooms feature an attic suite with sloping wooden ceilings, while select rooms open onto private gardens. The dining area with a massive skylight brings daylight letting people enjoy meals under natural light.

Khan’s involvement extended to the smallest details, such as installing underfloor heating suited to Dalhousie’s winter chill to designing outdoor decks framed by stunning mountains.
Positioned in the premium segment, The Chestnut Grove caters to families and groups seeking privacy in a scenic setting. Individual rooms are typically priced between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per night, depending on the season.
