Scientists and designers have unveiled a luxury handbag crafted from collagen inspired by T. rex fossils, presenting it as a bold proof of concept for lab-grown leather.

The teal-toned handbag is currently being exhibited at the Art Zoo Museum in Amsterdam, displayed dramatically atop a rock inside a cage beneath a T. rex replica. The installation will remain open to visitors until May 11, after which the piece will go under the hammer. Reports suggest the auction will begin at over $500,000 (around Rs 5 crore).

Created by fashion house Enfin Levé, the bag features embellishments of sterling silver and black diamonds. Alongside the finished piece, a small 10-by-15-centimetre sample of the material has been valued between €10,000 and €20,000.

A Pre-Historic Comeback

The material itself was developed by creative agency VML in partnership with The Organoid Company and Lab-Grown Leather Ltd. Researchers began by isolating fossilised collagen fragments from T. rex remains discovered in the United States. Using these fragments, they reconstructed missing genetic sequences to produce a complete collagen blueprint.

How Did Scientists Create This T-Rex Leather?

Scientists involved in the project explained that the process relied on ancient protein fragments recovered from dinosaur fossils, which were integrated into a host cell to generate collagen later transformed into leather.

“There were a lot of technical challenges,” said Thomas Mitchell, CEO of The Organoid Company, one of the three firms behind the “T. rex leather” bag. The collaboration builds on earlier experimental work between Organoid and VML. In 2023, the two groups attracted attention for creating a giant meatball by combining woolly mammoth DNA with sheep cells.

Che Connon, CEO of Lab-Grown Leather Ltd., which played a key role in producing the material, suggested that its prehistoric inspiration adds a unique appeal. The T. rex connection, he said, gives the product extra “oomph”. “It’s not just about a green alternative to leather, it’s a technological upgrade,” Connon said of lab-grown leather.

However, not everyone in the scientific community is convinced by the “T. rex leather” label. Some experts argue that the material inevitably relies on modern animal biology. Dutch vertebrate palaeontologist Melanie During of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam noted that collagen found in dinosaur fossils typically survives only in highly fragmented forms, making it insufficient to recreate authentic dinosaur skin or leather.

While this inaugural handbag is a one-of-a-kind piece, the developers say the material itself is intended for broader use. Plans are already in place to scale production and make it available to designers and brands, initially within the luxury accessories space. Over time, its applications could expand into fashion, automotive design, and other industries requiring advanced, high-performance materials.
