In mechanical watchmaking, power is invisible — until a watchmaker decides it shouldn’t be. The power reserve indicator exists to answer a simple, anxiety-inducing question: How much life is left in the movement? Traditionally, it’s been a polite little arc on the dial, quietly informing you when it’s time to wind. But in the hands of inventive watchmakers, this once-humble complication has evolved into something far more expressive — a visual metaphor for energy, tension, and time itself.

Because if a tourbillon is watchmaking’s ballet, the power reserve is its heartbeat. It reveals what’s happening beneath the dial: springs tightening, gears resisting, energy being rationed with mechanical discipline. And when treated creatively, it becomes more than information, it becomes narrative. Here are five watches that don’t just show power reserve. They perform it.

Breguet Classique 7235

The dial of this 39mm Breguet gold watch is the centre piece. Inspired by the No.5 pocket watch, it also marks a certain evolution compared to the Classique 7137, by replacing the date sub-dial with a small seconds and repositioning and reshaping the power reserve and moon phase indicators in a more elegant way. This timepiece has two central hands, its power reserve between 10 and 11 o’clock, its moonphase at 2 o’clock and its small seconds, here lightly offset between 5 and 6 o’clock. Powering the watch is calibre 502.3.DRL relies on the same base as the calibre 502.3 DR.1 found in the Classique 7137. This thin automatic movement stands apart by the use of an offset oscillating weight, which opens up space for optimised distribution of the watch’s components. That said, the movement has been updated to accommodate the new display on the front and is now equipped with a silicon balance-spring. Running at a 3Hz frequency, it retains a 45-hour power reserve.

Moritz Grossmann Power Reserve Salmon

The 41 mm timepiece comes housed in a three-part stainless steel case with a filigree bezel and integrated lugs. The salmon-coloured dial has blue Arabic numerals, a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock, and a linear power reserve indicator in a white and blue combination, situated right below 12 o’clock. When the movement is fully wound, the indicator is coloured white; when the power reserve falls, the blue part of the bar increases. Powering the Moritz Grossmann salmon dial watch is the in-house manual winding, automatic, Calibre 100.2, which is regulated in five positions offering a 42-hour power reserve.

The Longines Conquest Heritage Central Power Reserve has a 38mm stainless steel case housing the exclusive self-winding Longines calibre L896.5, a mechanical movement beating at 25,200 vibrations per hour and featuring a monocrystalline silicon balance spring, central rotating disc power reserve display, date function at 12 o’clock, and an impressive 72-hour power reserve. This redesigned icon stands out with its anthracite dial enhanced by Swiss Super-LumiNova® and protected beneath a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with multi-layer anti-reflective coating on both sides, paired seamlessly with an integrated anthracite alligator leather strap. IWC Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G63

The other IWC Mercedes-AMG watch features a 46.5 mm ceramic matrix composite (CMC) case and lugs, and is engineered in close collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). One can spot a large, onion-shaped Ceratanium® crown at 3 o’clock. The black dial also gets a diamond texture with white hour markers and a date window at 6 o’clock sporting a black background and white numeral. powered by an in-house IWC-manufactured 52010 calibre and use the smallest movements of the rotor in both directions to build up a power reserve of seven days in two barrels, the display is visible at 3 o’clock.

The 40mm Dimier case watch features an openworked design that showcases the nuances of a new movement. It has an inverted configuration, with the balancing wheel, regulating organ, and a piece of the gear train generating energy from a single barrel. A new bridge was built for the second cage, enhancing the visual impression. On top of the seconds wheel is a three-pronged running seconds indication with three fire-blue hands at 9 o’clock. The off-set dial is designed for symmetry, with the hours and minutes at 3 o’clock and the power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, which has a 7-day marking. The watch face, which is also produced in-house, is emerald green with a guilloche look.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre Chronograph

Jaeger-LeCoultre engineers created Calibre 391 from scratch; it’s a fully integrated movement that includes a manually wound mono-pusher chronograph with moonphase and night-day complications, two power reserve indicators, and a seconde foudroyante (flying second) display. The two power reserves (50 hours for each barrel and gear train) are shown on an arc-shaped bridge on either side of the subdial. On this 42.5 mm platinum watch, a single crown winds both barrels, one goes forward to power the timekeeping function and the other backwards to power the complications.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive U.F.A.

The 37 mm Ref. SLGB001 features a platinum case with polished lugs and a crown at 3 o’clock. This novelty has a blue dial with a pressed design, inspired by the splendour of ice forests, as well as a silver-coloured seconds hand that glides smoothly. There are applied hour markers and a triple diamond design at 12 o’clock. The hour and minute hands are dauphine, and there is a date window at 3 o’clock. Turning the watch reveals the skeleton platinum caseback with a view of Calibre 9RB2 boasting a 72-hour power reserve a power reserve indicator.
