Dubai’s iconic Burj Al Arab hotel is set for a big transformation. It’s leading to its temporary 18-month closure for the first time since its inception in 1999 due to extensive renovation work. A staff member confirmed the development on Wednesday as reported by Reuters, signalling a significant moment for one of the world’s most reputed luxury hotels.

The closure comes at a significant time for regional tourism. The ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, have disrupted travel across the Middle East. Dubai, a global tourism hub, has faced its ripple effects with flight disruptions and declining visitor demand, which is slowing international travel.
Is Burj Al Arab permanently shutting down?
No, the Jumeirah Burj Al Arab will remain closed for approximately 18 months due to the restoration programme. The hotel’s parent group, Jumeirah Group, shared in a statement that the work would unfold in carefully planned phases over this period. The project will be led by Paris-based interior architect Tristan Auer, though the company did not initially specify a full closure.

“Jumeirah Burj Al Arab is currently undergoing a carefully phased restoration programme designed to refresh and upgrade the hotel’s iconic décor while preserving its distinctive character. The programme has been developed through long-term planning, following more than 25 years of continuous operation. We would be pleased to assist with an alternative reservation in one of our Jumeirah properties in town,” reads the luxury hotel’s website on the temporary closure.

During the renovation period, all in-house facilities such as restaurants and wellness spaces will cease operations. This includes the Michelin-starred Al Muntaha on the 27th floor, along with the famed Skyview Bar known for its afternoon tea rituals and signature gold leaf coffee. Guests attempting to book are being redirected to other Jumeirah properties, with availability currently blocked on aggregator platforms until June 2027.

Why Is Burj Al Arab Famous?
Widely regarded as one of the most luxurious hotels in the world, the Burj Al Arab is a “seven-star” property. It’s known for its striking sail-shaped silhouette and rich offerings. Rising 321 metres above the Arabian Gulf on a man-made island, and located about 280 metres off Jumeirah Beach, the hotel is connected to the mainland by a private curved bridge, which makes it an exclusive haven for HNI’s.

Since its opening in 1999, the hotel has played a key role in positioning Dubai as a global luxury destination. The property is known for its lavish suites, world-class dining experiences, an award-winning spa, and the chic SAL beach club offering panoramic sea views. Over the years, the Dubai hotel has become a symbol of architectural and hospitality excellence.

Now, after more than 25 years of continuous operation, the Burj Al Arab is preparing for a new chapter to preserve its iconic legacy.
