If you are the kind of person who believes a handbag is not an accessory but a personality, a manifesto, a whole entire mood, you have found your people. And your brand. I am, of course, talking about Judith Leiber, the house that looked at the concept of “evening bag” and said, absolutely not, we are making art.

For years now, we have watched the Nita Ambanis, Isha Ambanis and Shalini Passis of the world swan about in their rhinestone-encrusted minaudières, leaving the rest of us to obsessively decode the craftsmanship, the crystals, the sheer audacity of it all from a safe and envious distance. We screenshot. We zoomed in. We wept, softly, into our regular bags.

Judith Leiber Arrives In India: First Stop Is New Delhi
Well, weep no more. Judith Leiber Couture has opened its first Indian boutique, right at The Chanakya in New Delhi, and you can now walk in, touch things, try things and – if the universe loves you and your credit card agrees, take one home. No more ordering blind online and hoping the gods of impulse purchases are smiling upon you.

The store carries the brand’s most iconic silhouettes – think the Bow Top Handle, the Crown Jewels, the Butterfly clutch, plus a seasonal mix that feels like stepping into a very glamorous fever dream. I went for the grand store launch and I will tell you this with my whole chest: I was destroyed. In the best possible way. The French fry bag! The black hot air balloon! And my personal undoing, the Rectangle Dome London Call in red – a bag so chic it made me question every life choice that led me to not already owning it.

But the real showstoppers? The India-specific edit. Tailored for us. Made for us. Outrageously, magnificently extra, just the way an extra person – and I say this as someone who absolutely is one, truly deserves.
Here, in absolutely no order because ranking art is barbaric, are the ones I cannot stop thinking about.
Elephant Majestic

Dove grey crystals, gold accents, jewel-toned drama – the Elephant Majestic is what happens when couture looks at India’s most beloved symbol and decides to throw a glittering, unapologetic party in its honour. This is not a bag you carry to a wedding; this is a bag that makes an entrance, and very nonchalantly steals the bride’s thunder.

Sculpted with the kind of weight and presence that commands a room, it is simultaneously maximalist and refined, which is frankly the hardest thing to pull off and this little elephant does it effortlessly. Big fat Indian wedding circuit, meet your new mascot.

Wildcat Bengal Tiger

India gave the world the Bengal Tiger and Judith Leiber has responded accordingly, with crystals. The Wildcat Bengal Tiger clutch is fierce in the most literal sense – structured, ferocious, utterly unbothered and it brings a very specific energy to any occasion, which is the energy of a woman who has decided she is the apex predator in the room, no matter the night or the company. An homage to India’s most magnificent wild cat, reimagined as something you carry on your wrist. National pride never looked this devastating.

Ganesh Shri

There is something deeply moving about watching a revered, beloved motif, one that sits in every Indian home, blessed at every beginning – be rendered in vibrant, intricately handset crystals with metallic detailing so refined it borders on devotional. The Ganesh Shri is tradition meeting modern luxury and shaking hands very warmly. It is heritage wearing couture and looking absolutely right doing so. For a culture where Ganesha blesses every new venture, carrying this to your next big occasion feels less like a fashion choice and more like a very stylish prayer.

Parrot Scarlet

You have seen this bird before. Specifically, on Shalini Passi, at approximately every glamorous event she has attended since acquiring one, because once you have a Parrot Scarlet you simply cannot leave it at home. It would be cruel. The wings unfold in a drama of red and iridescence, the feather detailing is almost aggressively beautiful, and the whole thing glows with the kind of tropical confidence that tropical birds carry naturally and the rest of us have to borrow from our accessories.

Go see them in person. Bring someone who will talk you into it because you will need the peer pressure. The Chanakya, New Delhi. Tell them the rhinestones sent you.
