Meet the USD1.25 Billion Boeing 747 8 Emerald King

Forget first class because this extraordinary Boeing 747 8 concept turns the sky into a private estate complete with grand lounges, a cinema, master suite, gym and even room for the family car

There are private jets, and then there is the Emerald King, which appears to have been designed after someone asked a rather dangerous question: what if a billionaire simply refused to leave his mansion when he went travelling? The answer is a Boeing 747 8 transformed into an airborne palace, reportedly valued at $1.25 billion, where the usual indignities of commercial aviation have been replaced by two storey lounges, private dining, bedrooms and enough personal space to make most penthouses feel slightly embarrassed. It is less an aircraft than a luxury estate that has somehow acquired wings.

The concept begins with one particularly outrageous proposition

The concept begins with one particularly outrageous proposition. You can board with your car. Rather than leaving the prized automobile behind in a garage while you fly across continents, the Emerald King incorporates space for a vehicle within its enormous interior. It is the sort of feature that immediately establishes the rules of this particular universe. We are not talking about maximising legroom here. We are talking about taking the entire lifestyle with you.

Inside, the aircraft is arranged more like an extravagant residence than a conventional business jet. A dramatic two storey lounge forms one of its principal social spaces, creating the kind of vertical grandeur normally associated with luxury hotels, private residences and buildings where the architect has been told that the budget is merely a suggestion. It gives the aircraft a sense of scale that would be almost impossible to replicate on a smaller private jet.

Then comes the dining space, where meals are enjoyed thousands of feet above the ground

Then comes the dining space, where meals are enjoyed thousands of feet above the ground. There is something wonderfully absurd about sitting down to dinner while the planet disappears beneath you, particularly when the dining room is likely to be more comfortable than many restaurants that have spent fortunes convincing us that uncomfortable chairs are somehow sophisticated.

For entertainment, the Emerald King provides a private cinema. Naturally. Because apparently crossing the Atlantic while looking out of a window is no longer sufficiently entertaining. A dedicated cinematic space allows passengers to retreat from the rest of the aircraft and watch films in surroundings designed more like a private screening room than an aeroplane cabin.

The sleeping arrangements are equally extravagant. At the heart of the private quarters is a master suite designed to provide the sort of privacy one normally associates with an elite hotel. A walk in wardrobe accompanies the suite, because even at 35,000 feet there is apparently no reason to travel lightly. And because billionaires have meetings too, the Emerald King includes an executive office. It transforms the aircraft into something resembling a private headquarters in the sky, allowing business to continue while the aircraft crosses time zones.

There is also a private gym, an addition that seems almost inevitable once you have enough space to install practically anything

There is also a private gym, an addition that seems almost inevitable once you have enough space to install practically anything. After all, flying around the world in a luxury suite is apparently no excuse for missing leg day. The attention to family life extends further with a luxury nursery, turning the aircraft into a flying environment capable of accommodating multiple generations. This is perhaps where the Emerald King becomes more than an extravagant toy. It imagines private aviation as a complete lifestyle, where work, leisure, dining, entertainment, exercise and family life continue uninterrupted regardless of geography.

The Boeing 747 8 is, of course, uniquely suited to such grand ambitions

The Boeing 747 8 is, of course, uniquely suited to such grand ambitions. Its enormous airframe provides the physical scale required to create spaces that resemble rooms rather than cleverly engineered aircraft cabins. Instead of asking how much luxury can be squeezed into an aeroplane, the Emerald King asks a rather different question: how much of a mansion can you put into one?

That is ultimately what makes the concept so fascinating. The Emerald King does not merely promise

That is ultimately what makes the concept so fascinating. The Emerald King does not merely promise to transport its passengers from one destination to another. It eliminates the distinction between travelling and arriving. Your car comes with you. Your office comes with you. Your cinema comes with you. Your bedroom comes with you. And somewhere between the two storey lounge and the master suite, the Emerald King makes commercial first class look less like luxury and more like an elaborate bus ride.
