September is when the world of luxury wakes up properly. US Open, New York – August 31–September 13
The final Grand Slam of the tennis calendar takes over New York as Flushing Meadows becomes the centre of the sporting world. The US Open is as much about the city’s energy as it is about tennis, with packed stands, celebrity sightings and an atmosphere that is considerably louder than Wimbledon’s polite clapping. For those looking for the full New York experience, September is a particularly good excuse to combine championship tennis with the city’s restaurants, hotels, galleries and shopping.

Venice International Film Festival – September 2–12
Few film festivals can compete with Venice for glamour. Held on the Lido, the Venice International Film Festival brings together some of cinema’s biggest stars, directors and producers against one of the world’s most photogenic backdrops. Red carpets, premieres and yacht arrivals make the festival as much a social event as a celebration of cinema. It is also the sort of place where the journey to dinner can involve a boat, which immediately improves almost everything.

For anyone who thinks a weekend should involve considerably more noise, speed and Italian drama, Monza is the obvious destination.
