Nana Patekar Dies at 75: From Earning Rs 35 a Month to Building a Crore-Worth Fortune

Nana Patekar’s financial journey is anything but conventional, from earning Rs 35 a month by painting film posters to building a reported fortune of up to Rs 80 crore. Here’s how his decades-long career in Hindi and Marathi cinema translated into wealth, properties and assets, while his personal lifestyle remained strikingly modest

Nana Patekar’s life could hardly be measured in crores when he was 13. After his family’s finances collapsed, he began painting film posters in Mumbai, walking around eight kilometres to work for Rs 35 a month and one meal a day. Decades later, he had built a nearly five-decade career across Hindi and Marathi cinema and a reported fortune estimated at Rs 50-80 crore. Patekar passed away in Goa on October 8, 2026, aged 75, after a cardiac arrest.

Yet the story behind his wealth is compelling for another reason. Even after cinema turned his name into a valuable one, Patekar’s personal choices remained remarkably removed from the trappings of celebrity wealth. His reported properties and earnings reveal a sizeable fortune, while his homes, cars and approach to money suggest someone who never felt the need to perform his success.

The Price of First Break

Patekar began his acting journey through theatre before making his Hindi film debut with ‘Gaman’ in 1978. Over the years, his performances in films such as ‘Parinda’, ‘Krantiveer’, ‘Agni Sakshi’, ‘Ab Tak Chhappan’, ‘Welcome’ and ‘Natsamrat’ established him as one of Indian cinema’s most distinctive performers.

The financial rewards grew alongside that reputation. In the later part of his career, Patekar was reportedly earning around Rs 2-3 crore per film. His wealth was accumulated over decades rather than through a single blockbuster payday, with acting forming the central pillar of his income.

What makes the figure particularly striking is the distance between those earnings and his lifestyle. Patekar continued to favour functionality over spectacle, even as his name became synonymous with some of the most memorable performances in Hindi films.

Where Crores Went

His property portfolio offers perhaps the clearest glimpse into that philosophy. In Mumbai, Patekar reportedly continued to live in a roughly 750-square-foot one-bedroom apartment in Andheri, bought decades ago for around Rs 1.1 lakh. Its present estimated value is close to Rs 3 crore.

He also owned a home in Goa and a 27-acre farmhouse near Khadakwasla in Pune. The latter was more working farm than celebrity retreat, with crops including wheat and paddy cultivated on the property. Reports say Patekar divided his time between his Mumbai, Goa and Pune homes.

Even his cars reflected a relatively restrained approach. Reports have listed a Mahindra Jeep CJ4, Mahindra Scorpio and Audi Q7 among his vehicles, rather than an extravagant collection of supercars.

Patekar’s relationship with wealth appeared to be less about displaying what he could afford and more about having the freedom to live according to his own needs. His journey from earning Rs 35 a month to building a reported multi-crore fortune remains as unconventional as the career that made him a household name.
