As the Prime Minister turns 76 on September 17, 2026, attention naturally falls on the extraordinary machinery that accompanies his public movements. The vehicles associated with Modi’s convoy are not chosen merely for their badges, leather interiors or imposing road presence. They are extensively protected machines engineered around a very different definition of luxury, one where ballistic resistance, blast protection, run flat tyres, sealed cabins and emergency systems matter considerably more than panoramic roofs or massage seats. Around them operates a larger security formation involving escort and tactical support vehicles. The result is a motorcade where every automobile has a purpose, and where conspicuous luxury is often secondary to an almost obsessive emphasis on safety and mobility.
Mercedes Maybach S650 Guard
Among the most recognisable vehicles associated with Modi’s current convoy is the Mercedes Maybach S650 Guard. Introduced into his security detail in 2021, the heavily protected luxury limousine represented a substantial upgrade from the protected Range Rover Vogue and Toyota Land Cruiser previously used. The Indian Express reported that the vehicle was acquired following extensive discussions between Mercedes and the Special Protection Group, with protective features examined and modifications ordered by the security agency.
The S650 Guard combines Maybach’s traditional emphasis on luxury with formidable protective engineering. Recent reports describe it as offering VR10 level ballistic protection, blast resistance, run flat tyres and an independent air supply system. Power comes from a 6.0 litre twin turbocharged V12 producing more than 500 hp, with its top speed electronically limited for security requirements. It has consequently become more than a luxury limousine. In the context of the Prime Minister’s motorcade, it is effectively a heavily fortified mobile command environment.

Range Rover Sentinel
The Range Rover Sentinel brings a very different character to the convoy. Its SUV architecture also gives the security detail the advantages of additional ground clearance and a commanding driving position. There is something particularly appropriate about the Sentinel’s presence in the motorcade. A Range Rover is already designed around the idea of travelling almost anywhere; the security version simply adds an extraordinary layer of protection to that philosophy.

Toyota Fortuner And Land Cruiser
Not every vehicle in the convoy needs to carry the Prime Minister. Some are there to make sure the entire movement remains secure and mobile. Armoured Toyota Fortuners are widely reported as SPG escort and tactical support vehicles. Their combination of SUV proportions, durability and manoeuvrability makes them practical components of a convoy that has to operate through everything from crowded urban roads to long highway movements. Toyota Land Cruisers have also been associated with the Prime Minister’s security movements, particularly as dependable support vehicles. Their reputation for durability and all terrain capability makes them logical choices for a role where reliability is not a luxury but a necessity.

The fascinating aspect of Narendra Modi’s motorcade is that its luxury is almost incidental. The Maybach may carry the unmistakable prestige of one of Mercedes’ most expensive marques, while the Range Rover brings the cachet of Britain’s most celebrated luxury SUV, but their true purpose is security. The convoy is ultimately a carefully coordinated system rather than a collection of expensive cars.
