The technology world often belongs to those who understand human behaviour before they understand markets. Few Indian entrepreneurs have demonstrated that instinct quite like Kunal Shah. Known for turning everyday financial habits into a premium digital experience, Shah built CRED into one of India’s most recognised fintech brands by changing the way people looked at something as ordinary as paying a credit card bill.

Now, after years of shaping India’s startup landscape, Shah is stepping

Now, after years of shaping India’s startup landscape, Shah is stepping into a new global chapter. He will join Meta Platforms to lead WhatsApp globally, bringing his experience in consumer technology, product thinking and digital communities to one of the world’s largest communication platforms.

The move comes as Meta invests $900 million in CRED, marking another significant moment in the company’s journey. When CRED launched in 2018, the idea was simple but ambitious: reward people for responsible financial behaviour. Instead of treating credit card payments as a routine transaction, CRED created a platform that rewarded users for paying bills on time. The company built a premium ecosystem around financial discipline, combining rewards, exclusive experiences and a community driven approach.

The concept resonated with India’s growing base of digitally savvy consumers

The concept resonated with India’s growing base of digitally savvy consumers who valued convenience, security and personalised experiences. Within a few years, CRED became one of the most talked about fintech companies in India. Under Shah’s leadership, CRED raised more than $900 million from global investors through primary and secondary capital. The company also completed four ESOP buybacks, giving employees an opportunity to participate directly in the value they helped create.

The journey reflected a broader transformation in Indian entrepreneurship, where technology companies were no longer simply solving utility problems but building aspirational brands. CRED became an example of how finance, design and consumer psychology could come together. As Shah moves to Meta, his focus shifts from building one consumer technology company to helping shape one of the world’s largest digital platforms.

WhatsApp, used by billions of people globally, sits at the centre of modern communication. From personal conversations to business interactions, the platform has become a fundamental part of everyday life. Shah’s experience in creating consumer focused products and understanding digital communities will be central to his new role.
