If you’ve ever wondered why a luxury watch can survive a decade of daily abuse while your phone screen cracks simply by thinking about gravity, the answer is sapphire. Not the sparkly, engagement-ring kind, no, this is the lab-grown, industrial-strength, “I-could-survive-a-fight-with-a-chainsaw” kind. Watchmakers adore it because it’s almost impossible to scratch, practically weightless, and so clear you might forget it’s there at all… which is exactly the point. Sapphire is the automotive equivalent of a bulletproof windscreen on a supercar: overengineered, undeniably excessive, and absolutely glorious. And when brands decide to carve entire cases out of it? That’s where things go from sensible engineering to full-blown horological madness—and I mean that in the most magnificent way possible.

It is made from monobloc aluminium, suspended and inclined, and a patent application is pending for this unique mechanical configuration. The piece has no dial. The gaze is drawn directly to the mechanism to read the time. The MP-10 features a highly architectural design and a particularly expressive movement built around volume and depth. The time is read from top to bottom, fluidly and naturally. The power reserve is particularly expressive, with a two-tone disc (red and green) set coaxially to the hours and minutes. powering the watch is HUB9013 inclined at 35° offering a 48-hour power reserve.

Jacob & Co x Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon

Jacob&Co x Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon features a 30º inclined tourbillon

The Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon timepiece has done something no one has ever even attempted before – to seamlessly marry engines and watches. The novelty features a 30º inclined tourbillon. The “flying” part of the tourbillon means that the regulating organ is only supported on one side, so the tourbillon is even more mesmerizing. The crankshaft turns and the 16 pistons pump up and down, just like a true internal combustion engine. Two “turbochargers” (down from four in the actual Chiron engine) on the side of the engine block spin while the engine runs, adding to the visual impact. The power reserve for the animation and the power reserve for timekeeping are different, yet both are wound through the winding crown, clockwise for the movement, counterclockwise for the engine animation. The power reserve indication even has the universal gas pump symbol on the side of the gauge at nine o’clock. Available in bespoke colour ways including rose gold, titanium, white ceramic, sapphire crystal, pave, etc.

On the dial side, the creature’s spine undulates, its eye and jaw open and close, its tongue moves, its crest rises and falls, and its claws grasp a rotating pearl. This is an Akoya pearl, grown exclusively in Japan using specific processes that give it a brilliance unlike traditional freshwater pearls. Incorporating this pearl marked a first for Jaquet Droz. Its iridescence gives it an ever-changing, elusive face, in perpetual motion, like the Dragon which clutches it. The collector, who was very involved in the creation of this unique piece, had specifically requested an opal that featured many dark blue tones. The hour dial also features stone. Here, it is a disc made from onyx. This mineral produces a perfect, intense black. It provides an elegant backdrop for two white gold hands, creating the perfect contrast to facilitate reading of the hours and minutes.
