Isha Ambani Brings A $100,000 Mango To The Met Gala

She carried a mango to the Met Gala. Not a Judith Leiber minaudière shaped like one. Not a rhinestone-encrusted interpretation of one. An actual mango sculpture, twenty years old, made by celebrated Indian artist Subodh Gupta, held in her hand like the most iconic cultural statement on that entire staircase. And that, right there, is Isha Ambani’s whole formula. She takes what is ordinary, rooted, deeply Indian, and walks it into the most elite room in fashion without blinking.

This was her first time wearing a traditional sari to the Met, and the choice of garment alone said everything. She said it herself while walking the Met steps in a conversation with Vogue, “For me, there is no garment more deserving of being called an art form than the sari.” We agree! For a theme like Costume Art, there was no better answer.

The sari itself was designed by Gaurav Gupta in collaboration with the Swadesh collective, and it was not a sari that simply looked beautiful. Real gold thread was woven into six yards of Banarasi tissue silk by master artisans, and that was just the foundation. National Award-winning Swadesh artisans were brought into Gupta’s atelier specifically to hand-paint the fabric with motifs pulled from the Ajanta cave murals, among the oldest visual records of the sari in Indian history. Zardozi, aari and dabka embroidery in gold thread, metal coil, sequins and crystals were then built on top of that painted surface. Fifty artisans. Over 1,200 hours. A garment that carried centuries in its weave.

For the red carpet moment, Gupta took a second Banarasi tissue sari and put it through his signature resin draping process, hardening it into a sculptural cape that rose around Isha’s neck like an architectural frame and swept behind her with the pallu. It should not have worked as both structure and softness simultaneously. It absolutely did.

The blouse deserves its own exhibition because 1,800 carats of diamonds, emeralds, polki and kundan from Nita Ambani’s personal collection sewn into a single garment is not something you see daily. The look also included a historic sarpech piece placed at the back, which was once part of the Nizam’s collection. Heirloom, heritage, history, all worn on her body like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Then there was the hair. The jasmine-inspired hair sculpture featuring around 600 hand-painted, jasmine-inspired flowers was a reinvention of the traditional mogra gajra, built from paper, copper and brass over 150 hours by Brooklyn-based artist Sourab Gupta. The mogra gajra is possibly the most Indian, most accessible, most everyday adornment there is. Flower vendors sell it outside temples for anywhere between Rs 10 – Rs 50. And Isha Ambani wore a version of it to the Met Gala and it was breath-taking.

And then the mango. Aam. India’s national fruit. The sculpture was made by celebrated Indian artist Subodh Gupta, about twenty years old, carried to the Met as a handbag. It reportedly costs about $100,000 according to Truss Archive Instagram page. It was the most talked-about accessory on the carpet and arguably the most loaded with meaning. Khaas, made from aam.

It was a powerful reminder that India’s crafts, India’s artists, India’s everyday symbols belong on every stage there is.
