Some people become famous, some become legends, and then there was Marilyn Monroe. A woman so iconic that decades after her death, a white dress blowing above a subway grate remains one of the most recognisable images in human history. She wasn’t merely a movie star; she was a cultural phenomenon, a symbol of glamour, mystery, beauty and vulnerability wrapped into one unforgettable figure. Entire industries have been built around preserving fragments of her legacy. Which is why, on the centenary of her birth on June 1, 2026, Blancpain has chosen to honour her with something deeply personal. Not a sculpture, not a painting, not another Hollywood tribute. Instead, the Swiss manufacture has unveiled the Ladybird Tribute, a capsule collection of seven unique timepieces inspired directly by Marilyn Monroe’s own Blancpain watch, rediscovered and acquired by the Maison in 2016 after decades hidden within the shadows of her estate.

Before discussing the watch itself, it is worth remembering why Marilyn Monroe still matters. Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, she transformed herself into the defining screen icon of the 20th century. Films such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot turned her into a global sensation. Her performances blended humour, charisma and surprising emotional depth, creating characters that felt simultaneously larger than life and remarkably human. While many remember the glamour, Monroe’s enduring appeal lies in her ability to command attention with effortless confidence while revealing glimpses of vulnerability beneath the spotlight. It is this combination of elegance and individuality that Blancpain seeks to capture with the Ladybird Tribute, a collection that transforms one of her most intimate possessions into a modern horological masterpiece.

The Ladybird Tribute faithfully echoes the design language of Monroe’s original cocktail watch while elevating it with contemporary watchmaking. The rectangular case measures 35 mm by 16 mm and is crafted entirely from 18K white gold, preserving the elongated Art Deco silhouette that made the original so distinctive. The architectural geometry is enhanced by a fully diamond-set construction featuring 85 diamonds totaling 1.360 carats, including brilliant-cut and marquise-cut stones arranged to accentuate the watch’s elegant vertical profile. The slim proportions are complemented by a sapphire crystal and exhibition caseback, allowing the watch to maintain its refined appearance while revealing the mechanics within.

The opaline dial remains true to the historic original, featuring yellow gold applied hour markers and elegant conical hands. Its restrained design allows the gemstones and proportions to take centre stage, creating a harmonious balance between jewellery and timekeeping. Each of the seven watches bears one letter from the name MARILYN engraved on the caseback, transforming the collection into seven individual tributes rather than a conventional limited edition.

Powering the Ladybird Tribute is Blancpain’s in-house Calibre 510, a manual-winding movement measuring just 2.60 mm thick. Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, the calibre comprises 128 components and 23 jewels while delivering a robust 52-hour power reserve. The movement can be admired through the sapphire exhibition caseback, reinforcing the connection between traditional Swiss watchmaking and high jewellery craftsmanship.

Completing the watch is a double-wrap calf leather strap offered in one of seven exclusive colours developed with Pantone specifically for Marilyn Monroe’s centennial celebration. Each colour reflects a different aspect of Monroe’s visual legacy, ensuring every piece possesses its own personality. Limited to just seven unique watches and priced at CHF 41,000, the Blancpain Ladybird Tribute is far more than a commemorative release. It is a rare opportunity to wear a piece of Hollywood history reimagined through the lens of contemporary haute horlogerie.
