Cannes 2025: Angelina Jolie Is The Essence Of Quiet Luxury To The Riviera

Angelina Jolie's return to the Cannes Film Festival after more than a decade was nothing short of regal. Dressed in a custom Brunello Cucinelli gown spun from cashmere and silk, her look shimmered with sequinned subtlety — a textbook example of quiet luxury on the world’s most glamorous red carpet

In typical Jolie flair, Angelina Jolie returned triumphantly to the Cannes Film Festival after a 14-year absence, displaying grace, moderation, and a hint of glitter. Arriving at the Eddington premiere on May 16, 2025, the 49-year-old actress looked poised and glamorous in a custom-made Brunello Cucinelli gown. Her ensemble exemplified the fashion trend she has come to define on and off the red carpet: quiet luxury.

Made completely of silk and cashmere, the strapless dress was adorned with a delicate constellation of sequins. The gown shimmered when Jolie moved, creating a more poetic than performative effect that was subtle but unquestionably fascinating. Jolie went true to form with this ivory-toned creation that matched her appreciation of warm neutrals and sophisticated lines. Jolie is known for her penchant for muted tones and simple elegance.

The silhouette of the gown, with its delicate A-line skirt and fine embroidery, was the type that makes a statement without being overt. Jolie’s 2011 Cannes style, a striking chocolate gown with a bold slit, is a far cry from the noisier red carpet choices of previous decades. Her 2025 ensemble, on the other hand, was sophisticated, contemplative, and purposeful; it was a visual depiction of her development both personally and professionally.

Jolie’s ensemble was completed with a distinctive dash of vintage Hollywood elegance, paired with sparkling Chopard jewellery, including a pear-shaped diamond necklace and matching earrings. Jolie exuded quiet confidence as she posed and held hands with co-stars Marie Colomb and Finn Bennett, as well as Chopard’s co-president Caroline Scheufele. Her presence was enough; no theatrics were needed.

Jolie’s appearance at Cannes wasn’t just about fashion. The Hollywood veteran was named godmother of the prestigious Trophee Chopard Award, which honours up-and-coming acting talent. In her new role, she joins a legacy of mentors including Demi Moore, Julianne Moore, and Robert De Niro. Jolie will provide ongoing guidance to the award winners throughout the year — a natural extension of her longstanding advocacy for creativity and humanitarianism.

Jolie’s return to the red carpet felt like a wake-up call, despite the fact that she had maintained a relatively quiet profile since the awards season. She has recently embraced a wardrobe that emphasises soft, tactile luxury; consider camel coats, milk hues, and vintage designs. Her style is still based on thoughtful, sensible design, whether it is in pieces from her own label, Atelier Jolie, or custom Alexander McQueen. Her Cannes ensemble carried on that theme, with its subdued colour scheme and delicate accents providing a calm counterpoint to the visual cacophony of many red carpet events.

Jolie’s style was certain to change, as it had been almost ten years since her most recent Cannes Film Festival stagings. However, the Jolie who returned in 2025 is very different from the one who went in 2011. In an attempt to match her iconic black Oscars gown, Jolie wore a strapless chocolate dress with a slit at the Tree of Life premiere fourteen years ago. A bow-like embellishment at her hip and additional ruching around the waist were features of the Cannes edition.

Jolie had accompanied Jack Black on the red carpet three years earlier while pregnant for the promotions of Kung Fu Panda. There was no sign of her contemporary predilection for neutrals; instead, the Greek goddess gown she had chosen instead included pleats along the skirt and a plunge neckline.

It’s interesting to note that Jolie gave a tribute to her comfort zone by picking Brunello Cucinelli for the premiere. Known for its classic designs and exquisite craftsmanship, the Italian brand is also responsible for many of the warm cashmere ensembles that Jolie has been seen sporting in New York. She gave what may have been a typical fashion moment emotional resonance by adapting that same sensibility to an haute couture setting. It was more than simply a dress; it was a representation of the life she had built outside of the spotlight.

Since Jolie’s previous stroll down La Croisette, a lot has changed. After founding Atelier Jolie in 2023 as an avenue for collaboration between tailors, artisans, and lovers of sustainable design, she is now a fashion entrepreneur. Although she frequently dons her own clothing line, Cannes demanded something new, and Cucinelli’s couture delivered with elegant poetry.

In a world where attention-seeking theatrics and maximalism are common trends in red carpet fashion, Angelina Jolie’s return to Cannes served as a calming reminder of the value of moderation. Her dress shimmered softly, like a gentle breeze across the Riviera, rather than screaming for the cameras. Jolie solidified her reputation as a Hollywood star and a subtly innovative fashion icon with each sequined cashmere stitch.

Welcome back to Cannes, Angelina — we missed your kind of sparkle.
