The glow of a diya, the movement of a dancer and the shimmer of handwoven silk come together in a celebration of India’s visual and textile heritage. Set against the architectural grandeur of a restored royal palace in Rajasthan, Apple’s Diwali film, ‘Step Into The Light’, turns the festival of lights into a showcase of Indian craftsmanship, colour and cultural expression. Created in collaboration with contemporary Indian fashion label Raw Mango, the film brings together traditional textiles and modern visual storytelling, placing India’s rich textile vocabulary at the centre of its narrative.

Directed by Raw Mango founder Sanjay Garg, the film was shot entirely on the iPhone 18 Pro at Tijara Fort, a restored 19th-century royal palace in Rajasthan. Built around a folk interpretation of Anu Malik’s iconic 1990s song Roop Suhana Lagta Hai, the film explores the transition from darkness to light through dance. Its choreography, performed by the Big Dance Centre troupe, blends traditional and contemporary movements, capturing the festive spirit through a sequence of synchronised performances.

Language of Indian Textiles

Founded in 2008 by textile designer Sanjay Garg, Raw Mango has built its identity around creating conversations through Indian textiles and culture. Its work spans saris, garments, objects, spaces and experiences, often drawing attention to traditional weaving practices through a contemporary design perspective.

The collaboration brings this approach into a cinematic setting. The wardrobe features textile traditions from across the subcontinent, including Mashru, Varanasi brocades and Chanderi. Each textile contributes its own texture, surface and visual character to the film, while the colours are selected to harmonise with the iPhone 18 Pro’s palette.

Rather than treating Indian textiles as decorative references, the film places them within a moving cultural narrative. The garments become part of the choreography, responding to the dancers’ movements and the interplay of light across the fort’s interiors. The result is a visual exploration of how traditional Indian textiles can find expression in contemporary settings without losing their cultural identity.

The collaboration also comes at an important moment for Raw Mango. The label made its international runway debut at London Fashion Week earlier this year, marking another step in its engagement with a global fashion audience.

Capturing the Festival of Light

Light is central to the film’s visual language, and Apple‘s camera technology plays a significant role in bringing the concept to life. Shot in low-light conditions, ‘Step Into The Light’ uses the iPhone 18 Pro’s 48MP Fusion Main camera, which introduces variable aperture to the iPhone for the first time. Its six laser-cut blades automatically adjust depth of field and lighting, while the aperture can widen to ƒ/1.48 to improve low-light performance.

Smart Focus Tracking keeps performers in focus as they move through the choreography, including when they leave and re-enter the frame. These features allow the film to capture the movement of the dancers while retaining the details of their garments and surroundings.

Speaking about the festival, Garg describes Diwali as the biggest celebration of the year, marking a change in weather and the arrival of winter in the company of loved ones.

The film leaves viewers with a reminder that India’s textile heritage is not a static archive of techniques and traditions. It continues to evolve through the people who preserve it, the designers who reinterpret it and the generations who wear it. In ‘Step Into The Light’, Raw Mango brings that idea into focus, allowing the richness of Indian craftsmanship to take centre stage in a celebration that feels rooted in tradition yet distinctly contemporary.
