Virat Kohli Expands One8 Into A Sports Brand, Launches New Signature Shoes

Virat Kohli finally created the cricket shoe he always wanted, transforming ONE8 from a lifestyle label into India’s boldest attempt at building a global high-performance sports brand

There are athletes who endorse products because someone hands them a cheque and a photoshoot schedule. And then there is Virat Kohli, a man so relentlessly obsessive about perfection that he reportedly rejected 17 different versions of his own cricket shoe before finally approving one. At that point, it stops being product development and starts resembling a Formula One engineering crisis. But that obsession has now produced something genuinely significant. With the launch of his new signature footwear under ONE8 World, Kohli is no longer merely attaching his name to sportswear. He is attempting to build India’s first truly global high-performance sports brand.

For years, Indian athletes largely played the role of ambassadors for international sportswear giants. Kohli has flipped that equation entirely. As co-founder of Agilitas Sports, he took direct creative control over the development process, shaping the shoe according to the demands of modern cricket and his own famously exacting standards. This was not about putting a logo on an existing silhouette. It was about engineering a shoe from scratch for the realities of elite cricket: explosive running, sudden directional changes, brutal impact loads, and endless hours on turf and grass. Most athletes would have approved the third prototype and headed off for lunch. Kohli apparently treated every rejected version like a failed innings at Lord’s. The design team went through seventeen iterations before arriving at the final model, which has now been christened “18” — a nod to the jersey number that became synonymous with his career, his identity, and, fittingly, the IPL season in which Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally lifted the trophy.

That obsessive refinement process is evident in the final product. The ONE8 shoe features a lightweight spike plate designed for rapid acceleration and aggressive traction, giving players stability whether they are sprinting for a second run or pivoting sharply in the outfield. The advanced energy-return midsole is engineered to absorb impact stress from fast bowling and repeated movement, reducing fatigue while improving responsiveness. In other words, it is designed to survive the punishment modern cricketers put their bodies through.

Visually, the shoe leans heavily into cricket culture itself. The materials and textures are inspired by the look and feel of a traditional red cricket ball, giving the footwear an unmistakably sport-specific identity rather than borrowing cues from generic running shoes or football boots. And that matters because cricket footwear has often felt strangely uninspired for a sport followed by billions. Kohli clearly wanted something that looked as emotionally connected to the game as it felt technically capable on the field.
