Geneva may be best known for its precision watchmaking, lakeside addresses and a calendar of international luxury gatherings, but the Swiss city has another pleasure worth slowing down for. Think freshly brewed coffee, buttery croissants, delicate pâtisserie and leisurely afternoons spent watching the city go by. During the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) 2026, visitors have another reason to explore its café culture between the celebrations of fine watchmaking.

The 26th edition of GPHG takes place on November 7, bringing together leading names from the international watchmaking industry at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices. The accompanying exhibition, featuring 84 nominated timepieces, continues at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire until November 15. Between exploring the exhibition and discovering Geneva’s historic streets, a café stop offers a more relaxed way to experience the city’s character.

A Taste of Horology

Coffee UP – Rive Droite makes a particularly fitting stop for GPHG visitors, bringing together two of Geneva’s defining interests, coffee and watchmaking. The speciality coffee shop has a horology-inspired identity, making it an interesting address for those who would like their coffee break to retain a connection to the city’s watchmaking culture. Its carefully prepared espresso and filter coffee offer a reason to linger.

Coffee With Character

Located on Rue Rousseau, Café Calico is a contemporary speciality coffee destination for visitors who appreciate a well-made flat white or espresso. Its daytime offering also makes it suitable for a breakfast or brunch stop, while its central location makes it convenient to include in a day spent exploring Geneva.

Set on Place du Bourg-de-Four in Geneva’s Old Town, Ferdinand offers an inviting setting for a coffee break surrounded by historic architecture. Its terrace, speciality coffee and selection of pastries and brunch dishes make it an appealing pause while exploring the neighbourhood’s cobbled streets.

The Art of Pâtisserie

Created in collaboration with The Woodward’s culinary team, Le Comptoir Woodward brings a more polished pâtisserie experience to central Geneva. Its selection of chocolates, cakes and pastries makes it a lovely address for an afternoon indulgence, particularly for travellers who enjoy pairing their coffee with something sweet.

Coffee enthusiasts looking for a more contemporary neighbourhood experience can head to Corde Coffee Coutance. The café houses an on-site roastery and bakery, with speciality coffee accompanied by freshly prepared sweet and savoury offerings. Its emphasis on coffee origins and in-house preparation adds another dimension to Geneva’s evolving café culture.

Those drawn to old-world European interiors will find an entirely different atmosphere at La Vouivre. Its ornate décor, vintage furniture, chandeliers and traditional tea-room setting make it an experience in itself. Visitors can settle down with coffee, tea and pâtisserie while taking in the café’s distinctly nostalgic character.

A Pause Between Discoveries

Geneva’s appeal lies as much in these unhurried experiences as it does in its celebrated watchmaking houses and cultural institutions. A morning spent examining intricate complications at the GPHG exhibition can easily lead into an afternoon of coffee and pâtisserie in the Old Town, while a speciality brew near the city centre offers a quieter interlude between appointments.

The pleasure is in allowing the city to set the pace. After all, a visit to Geneva need not be measured only by the time displayed on a finely crafted watch. Sometimes, the most memorable part of the journey is finding a charming café, ordering another cup of coffee and letting the afternoon unfold.
