Remember the time when Indian honeymooners, mostly the boomers and Gen X had only a handful of go-to honeymoon destinations. From Manali, Nainital to temples of South India, the options, spending power, exposure and taste were all limited. But Millennials and Gen Z honeymooners are changing the way we see honeymoon travel. Instead of a long haul honeymoon immediately post marriage, they’re looking for ‘minimoons’ — a quick post wedding getaway. It’s  a win-win for their pocket given their tight budgets and also squeezes in their already busy schedule after marriage. They’re taking weeklong honeymoons later, months after marriage celebrations are over so they can truly cherish the experience without hurry and worry.

Moreover, the new age newlywed couples are moving away from cookie-cutter packages and shifting toward itineraries that feel personal, authentic and meaningful. As per Pickyourtrail, a platform which curates international holidays, 62% of Gen Z prefer curated, narrative-rich journeys while 38% of millennials still lean towards familiar travel experiences on their honeymoon. As the meaning of honeymoon changes inclining towards experiential travel, here’s how it’s affecting honeymoon spending, and giving rise to interesting couple activities.

Unique couple activities to do on honeymoon

It’s said that travel is one of the best ways to know your partner. Whether it be a cherishable evening spent beach-side sipping on cocktails under a tangerine sky discussing life over martinitis and coming to a consensus on planning itinerary and declaring your love with souvenirs — you discover your partner’s rawest side with every experience. This exciting discovery of the life partner best comes when you delve in authentic experiences. And that’s what young honeymooners are looking for.

Over the last year, Indian honeymooners have shown a marked shift toward cultural immersion and hands-on activities switching extravagance for deeper, more authentic encounters. Cooking together has become one of Gen Z’s favourite honeymoon rituals. “At Pickyourtrail, we’ve seen more couples add local cooking classes to their itineraries, not as filler activities, but as meaningful moments of togetherness. In Japan, they try their hand at rolling sushi with precision; in Italy, it’s all about kneading pasta dough from scratch; in Bali, couples explore the island’s aromatic spice pastes in open-air kitchens… it’s less about mastering the dish and more about creating a shared story they can take home,” Hari Ganapathy, Co-founder, Pickyourtrail tells Outlook Luxe. This desire for experiential honeymoon travel is also making them dive into the rich local culture at their honeymoon destination. In Bali, many try their hand at making personalised silver jewellery under the guidance of local artisans, transforming a simple keepsake into a deeply meaningful reminder of their trip. Across Europe, museum trails, classical music nights, and art restoration workshops are becoming popular, while Southeast Asia draws couples toward temple trails, craft tours, and hands-on cooking sessions, as per Pickyourtrail’s report.

Modern honeymoons are just as much about slowing down as they are about discovery. “In Bali, couples are drawn to wellness rituals like spa therapies, at Tirtha temples, symbolising purification and new beginnings. In Japan, traditional onsen baths and sauna experiences are helping couples embrace stillness,” says Ganapathy. These slow rituals offer the much needed break from the tiredness of wedding celebrations.

How much are couples spending on their honeymoon?

As couples become particular about which honeymoon, some of them are even ready to break the bank! As per Pickyourtrail, most newlyweds now set aside ₹1–2 lakh for their honeymoon, with a growing segment choosing to spend ₹3–4 lakh for more customised experiences. “Over the years, we’ve recorded a 5% year-on-year increase in honeymoon spending,” says Hari Ganapathy, Co-founder of Pickyourtrail adding, “Five-night stays remain the preferred duration, with couples blending comfort and value while opting for private dining experiences, couple spa rituals, and creative workshops. An average booking window of 50–60 days suggests couples are planning smarter by locking in good deals without losing flexibility.”
