Namit Malhotra’s name has become closely associated with ‘Ramayana’, the ambitious two-part screen adaptation starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama. Yet the producer’s profile extends well beyond the film. A visual-effects entrepreneur with a career spanning nearly three decades, Malhotra built his business around the technology that helps bring cinematic worlds to life. His reported wealth has now placed him among new entrants on a global rich list.

The Hurun Global Rich List 2026 estimated Malhotra’s net worth at more than Rs 9,204 crore, ranking him 3,306th globally. The estimate is a snapshot as of January 15, 2026, and should be read as a reported valuation, not as cash or readily available personal assets. Whereas, the Hurun India Rich List 2026 valued the Malhotra family’s wealth at Rs 16,000 crore. This is a family estimate, not Namit’s individual net worth, an important distinction when discussing the ‘Ramayana‘ producer’s fortune.

A Business Built on Vision

Malhotra’s career began in 1995, when he started a video workshop in his father’s garage. Drawn to computer graphics and post-production, he recognised the possibilities of digital tools as they reshaped filmmaking. The venture later came together with his father Naresh Malhotra’s production business, Video Works, and developed into Prime Focus.

The company expanded beyond India into key international production centres. In 2006, Prime Focus became publicly listed on the BSE and NSE. Its growth reflected a larger ambition: to build an integrated media-services business spanning post-production, visual effects, technology and production.

A defining milestone came in 2014, when Prime Focus acquired the UK-based visual-effects studio Double Negative, widely known as DNEG. The deal strengthened its international presence and helped create a major global visual-effects operation. Prime Focus says the Malhotra family holds a 60.73% stake in the listed company, which in turn holds an 88.29% stake in DNEG. These figures offer context for the business interests behind the reported wealth, but do not mean the entire value of either company belongs to Namit personally.

The Business of Blockbusters

DNEG’s work on films such as ‘Inception’, ‘Interstellar’, ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and the ‘Dune’ films has earned recognition across the global film industry. Its Academy Award-winning projects have helped establish the scale of the visual-effects ecosystem Malhotra has spent years building. He currently serves as DNEG’s chairman and chief executive.

‘Ramayana’ represents a different expression of that ambition. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the two-part project brings together a large cast led by Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash. Malhotra has reportedly described the combined budget for the films as approximately USD 500 million, or more than Rs 4,000 crore. The production is a major creative bet on presenting an Indian epic to audiences worldwide.

The scale of ‘Ramayana’ also brings Malhotra’s long-standing interests in filmmaking and technology into sharper focus. An enterprise that began with a small video workshop is now connected to some of the world’s most ambitious film productions. The epic’s journey to the screen is therefore not just another chapter in Indian cinema, but a significant milestone in the career of an entrepreneur who has spent decades building the technology and creative infrastructure behind global storytelling.
