Designed by Gérald Genta and introduced in the 1970s, it transformed the luxury sports watch into an object of haute horlogerie. The 5740/1G takes that familiar silhouette and fills it with a perpetual calendar mechanism, combining the casual architecture of the Nautilus with the formidable technicality expected from Patek Philippe.
Paul has also been associated with the Patek Philippe Ref. 5224R, a rose gold travel time watch distinguished by its 24 hour display and more discreet aesthetic. Reported estimates place its value around $48,000 to $60,000.
Enter Richard Mille
Then comes Richard Mille, where subtlety rather spectacularly leaves the room. Paul has been publicly associated with the Richard Mille RM 011 Felipe Massa, a technically elaborate flyback chronograph whose tonneau shaped case and open construction represent almost everything that traditional watchmaking is not supposed to look like. The model has been estimated around the $150,000 mark in recent reporting, although values vary substantially by reference, material and condition.
The RM 011 is particularly appropriate for Paul because it embodies the modern luxury proposition of Richard Mille. Lightweight materials, motorsport inspiration, exposed mechanics and aggressive architecture are combined into something that looks almost engineered rather than manufactured.
It also introduces a fascinating contrast with the Patek Philippe pieces. The Nautilus Perpetual Calendar communicates centuries of accumulated watchmaking refinement through a contemporary icon. The Richard Mille announces its technical credentials almost immediately, as though the movement has decided that hiding would be terribly old fashioned.
