Formula One has never been short of prodigies, but every once in a while a driver arrives who makes the sport reconsider what is possible at such a young age. Kimi Antonelli has now done precisely that. At just 20 years and 68 days, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team driver has won the 2026 FIA Formula One World Drivers’ Championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, becoming the youngest World Champion in the history of the sport.

It is the sort of achievement that deserves a place in the history books, preferably in rather large lettering. But while the champagne, celebrations and inevitable photographs will occupy the headlines, there was another detail worth noticing on Antonelli’s wrist. The newly crowned champion wore the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team”, reference IW388108. And, as one might expect from a watch associated with a Formula One champion, it has a distinctly motorsport inspired personality.

A Champion’s Watch In Team Colours

The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 is not an extravagant piece designed to attract attention through precious metals or unnecessary decoration

The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 is not an extravagant piece designed to attract attention through precious metals or unnecessary decoration. Instead, it takes the familiar language of an aviation chronograph and gives it a contemporary motorsport identity through its materials, colours and functional layout. Its 41mm case is crafted from Grade 5 titanium, a material valued for its combination of strength, durability and lightweight properties. That makes it particularly appropriate for a watch connected to a sport where reducing weight and making the most of every component are fundamental principles. The titanium case also gives the chronograph a purposeful appearance without making it feel unnecessarily heavy on the wrist.

The black dial provides the foundation for the design, while the printing and luminescent details in PETRONAS green bring the Mercedes-AMG team identity into the picture. It is a restrained combination, but one that immediately connects the watch to the racing machinery Antonelli represents. The green rubber strap continues the colour scheme, giving the watch a sportier character and a comfortable alternative to more traditional bracelet or leather options. It is fitted with IWC’s EasX-CHANGE system, allowing the wearer to exchange the strap quickly and easily without the usual fuss. An additional accessory strap is also included.

A Chronograph Built For Precision

Beneath the sapphire crystal sits an automatic, self-winding IWC-manufactured movement.

Beneath the sapphire crystal sits an automatic, self-winding IWC-manufactured movement. The watch offers hours, minutes and small hacking seconds, alongside a day and date display and a chronograph function capable of measuring hours, minutes and seconds. The dial layout is particularly interesting. Three spiral-textured sub-dials provide the chronograph information: a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock and a 60-second counter at 6 o’clock. The double-framed day and date window is also positioned at 3 o’clock, giving the dial a busy but carefully organised appearance.

The sapphire glass is convex and features anti-reflective coating on both sides, helping maintain visibility across different lighting conditions. It is also secured against displacement caused by a sudden drop in air pressure, a characteristic that reflects the Pilot’s Watch collection’s aviation heritage. The result is a chronograph that brings together practical functionality and a design language shaped by precision instruments. Its connection to Formula One is expressed through the PETRONAS green detailing and titanium construction rather than an overly elaborate racing aesthetic.

Where Watchmaking Meets Motorsport

IWC's relationship with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team gives this edition an identity that extends beyond its specifications

IWC’s relationship with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team gives this edition an identity that extends beyond its specifications. Both worlds place considerable importance on engineering, precision and the pursuit of performance. In Formula One, fractions of a second can determine the difference between victory and defeat. In mechanical watchmaking, the challenge lies in translating intricate engineering into a reliable instrument that can be worn every day.

For Antonelli, the chronograph now carries an association with one of the defining achievements of his young career. Becoming a Formula One World Champion at 20 years and 68 days is an extraordinary milestone, and the Mexico City Grand Prix will remain an important chapter in the sport’s history. The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team” may not be a complicated grand complication or a precious metal statement piece, but it has something equally compelling: a direct connection to the world of elite motorsport and a moment of sporting history. After all, a watch can measure seconds, minutes and hours. Occasionally, it also becomes part of the story of someone who has changed the way we remember them.
