How Sabyasachi and The Met Are Turning 5,000 Years of Art Into Jewellery

A Roman sarcophagus, a Byzantine carving and jewel-toned stones from centuries past are finding a new expression in Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s latest jewellery collaboration. The Sabyasachi The Met collaboration brings together the Indian designer and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in a multi-year project that explores how art, craftsmanship and culture travel, evolve and acquire new meaning over time. The result is a Sabyasachi Met Museum jewellery collection that brings historic references into a contemporary wardrobe.

The Sabyasachi Metropolitan Museum of Art collaboration draws on the museum’s vast collection, which spans 5,000 years of art from around the world. Its first chapter focuses on high jewellery inspired by the art of the Byzantine Empire, with a runway presentation scheduled for September 15 during New York Fashion Week. The collection will subsequently extend its visual language across accessories and clothing, creating a wider dialogue between historic objects and contemporary design.

When History Crosses Borders

The choice of Byzantium is particularly evocative. Between the fourth and 15th centuries, the Byzantine world developed through constant exchanges between cultures, with artistic influences flowing through Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Persia and civilisations of the Far East. India, too, formed part of these networks through trade routes such as the Silk Route.

The Sabyasachi jewellery collaboration looks at this history not as something static, but as evidence of an ongoing conversation. Objects, motifs and techniques represented across The Met’s Greek and Roman, Medieval and Islamic art collections become points of departure. This is Sabyasachi jewellery inspired by ancient art, with imperial medallions, architectural ornament, ancient statuary, stonework and religious imagery translated into pieces intended for a modern wardrobe.

Antiquity Finds Modern Expression

The inaugural Sabyasachi high jewellery collection makes that transformation tangible. An 18-karat and 22-karat gold cuff incorporates garnet cabochons and brown diamonds, drawing inspiration from a third-century Roman sarcophagus. Another pendant combines tourmaline garnet, jasper, lapis lazuli and jade, referencing a Roman funerary relief. A tiger-claw necklace takes cues from a 12th-century Italian or Byzantine carved panel depicting animals, while another cuff draws from a late imperial Roman sculpture.

Every piece has been conceived, developed and handcrafted in India through Sabyasachi’s network of master artisans, giving the collaboration another layer of cultural exchange. The historical references may originate in museum galleries, but their physical transformation happens through Indian craftsmanship.

That tension between preservation and reinvention is central to the collaboration. Rather than reproduce the past, Sabyasachi reframes it, allowing centuries-old visual languages to inhabit contemporary forms.
