As one of the world’s most influential fashion events, New York Fashion Week has long served as a launchpad for designers shaping the future of luxury. Every season, it brings together the biggest names in fashion, global buyers, editors, celebrities and industry insiders, making it one of the most closely watched events on the international style calendar.
This September, the spotlight will be on Indian luxury designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. After keeping a relatively low profile on the runway in recent years, the celebrated couturier is returning to New York Fashion Week. He announced through an Instagram Reel that he will unveil his latest collection on September 15, marking his first appearance at the event in 17 years.
The announcement has already sparked excitement across the fashion industry, with many calling it one of the standout moments of this season’s New York Fashion Week.

A Return Nearly Two Decades in the Making

Sabyasachi last presented at New York Fashion Week in 2009, showcasing a ready-to-wear collection that adapted designs originally shown in Mumbai for an international audience. The collection stood out for its richly textured textiles, intricate hand embroidery, quilting and beadwork, paired with elegant separates and layered silhouettes that blended Indian craftsmanship with a distinctly global appeal. Critics praised the craftsmanship and the designer’s ability to reinterpret traditional techniques for a modern international wardrobe.
Looking back on that phase of his career, Sabyasachi has admitted that he entered the American market too early. In an earlier conversation with fashion journalist Suzy Menkes, he recalled her advice to return only when he had firmly established himself in India and could participate on his own terms. Nearly two decades later, that advice appears to have come full circle.
Since then, Sabyasachi has evolved from one of India’s leading couturiers into a global luxury brand. Today, his label spans bridal couture, fine jewellery, accessories and lifestyle, while his creations are worn by Bollywood stars, international celebrities and clients across the world.

Why Every Sabyasachi Runway Matters

Unlike many luxury designers who maintain packed calendars filled with runway shows, store launches and fashion week appearances, Sabyasachi has taken a more measured approach. He stepped away from the traditional fashion show format for several years, returning only occasionally, including for his widely acclaimed 25th anniversary presentation.
That rarity has made every Sabyasachi runway outing feel like an event. His presentations are remembered not just for the clothes but also for the immersive worlds they create through storytelling, music, set design and exceptional craftsmanship.
Details of the upcoming collection remain under wraps, but the September 15 showcase is already expected to be one of the defining moments of New York Fashion Week. It also comes at a time when Indian luxury fashion is commanding greater attention on the global stage.
For the industry, Sabyasachi’s return is more than a comeback. It marks the return of one of Indian fashion’s most influential creative voices to one of the world’s biggest runways after 17 years.
