The bad news is that India’s Oscar hopes end here. Neeraj Ghaywan’s “Homebound”, starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor, did not advance to the final nominations. Yet the film’s run, which saw it shortlisted among 15 titles from 89 international submissions, carried real weight, offering a reminder of the kind of stories Indian filmmakers are taking to the world stage.
The good news is that strong, ambitious filmmaking remains front and centre this awards season.
Oscars 2026 Nominations
At the top of the nominations is “Sinners”, Ryan Coogler’s genre-bending supernatural thriller, which has rewritten Oscar history with 16 nominations, the most ever for a single film. Set in 1930s Mississippi, the story follows twin brothers, played by Michael B. Jordan, as they open a blues club while navigating racism and a vampire threat.

The film features prominently in major categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and supporting acting nods for Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku, along with a mention in the Academy’s newly introduced casting category. The film now holds the record for the most Oscar nominations, previously shared by “All About Eve”, “Titanic” and “La La Land.”

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” follows closely with 13 nominations.

Widely considered a frontrunner heading into the announcements, the film earned acting nominations for Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn, though breakout performer Chase Infiniti was left out of the Best Actress race. “Frankenstein”, “Marty Supreme” and “Sentimental Value” received nine nominations each, while “Hamnet” secured eight. All are competing in a crowded Best Picture field alongside “Bugonia”, “F1”, “The Secret Agent” and “Train Dreams.”
One of the standout moments is Timothée Chalamet’s Best Actor nomination for “Marty Supreme”, in which he portrays table tennis prodigy Marty Mauser. He is widely seen as a strong contender for the win.

Elsewhere, the day brought notable omissions. “Wicked: For Good” failed to land any nominations, including the widely expected supporting actress nod for Ariana Grande. Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly”, starring George Clooney as a film star reassessing his life and career, also walked away empty-handed.
