Challenge – SpaceOne SpaceOne X Baltic – Seconde Majeure

The SpaceOne X Baltic Seconde Majeure approaches time display through an inventive jumping

The SpaceOne X Baltic Seconde Majeure approaches time display through an inventive jumping-hour complication that places mechanical ingenuity at the centre of its design. Developed by watchmaker Théo Auffret, its architecture revolves around three visible components working together to deliver an instantaneous change of hour. Beneath the minute disc, a central driving wheel completes one rotation every 60 minutes before engaging with a 12-tooth hour star connected directly to the hour disc. A specially designed jumper spring maintains the correct positioning while gradually building tension, releasing it in a sudden movement to advance the hour. The dial itself is machined from a single piece of German silver, serving both as the visual foundation and the structural mainplate of this distinctive mechanism.

At rest, the dial presents a clean three-hand configuration, concealing the chronograph mechanism beneath its restrained aesthetic. A single monopusher integrated into the caseband at 7.30 controls the entire operation. With the first press, three rhodium-plated chronograph hands instantly align at 12 o’clock and begin measuring elapsed time, while the rose gold hands continue displaying civil time. A second press stops the measurement, and a third makes the chronograph hands withdraw by aligning them with the current-time hands. The result is an ingenious interpretation of mechanical complexity, where functionality and discretion coexist without compromising dial clarity.
