Insomnia is a problem that cuts through class-divide, plaguing the rich and the poor. What does a century-old mattress brand have to do with this?

Well, they might have found a solution to a universal problem, and it is the bed after all. The Hästens store, recently opened in a tony location in Delhi’s Sultanpur, is an eye-opening experience. With sleep experts to assist you in ways to improve your sleep, the company believes every person’s requirement is different. Hence, beds are customised for each customer, which leads to attention to exact requirements.

The mission of Hästens is to make the world a happier, more peaceful place by providing a solution to this dilemma. However bad your day might have been, delivering extraordinary sleep experiences is a mission for this Swedish family-run business. The renowned company has finally opened doors in India and going to expand very soon to other cities such as Bengaluru.

The Limited Edition Bed: A Centenary Release

Hästens is driven by over a century of craftsmanship, and their latest release is a tribute to Jack Ryde, the man credited for introducing their now iconic blue-check bed. On the 100 Year Anniversary of the blue check, Hästens  has launched a Limited Edition 2000T. This exclusive bed is a tribute to Ryde, the visionary behind Hästens’ iconic Blue Check design, and commemorates the 100-year anniversary of both Jack Ryde and Solveig Ryde, born in 1925. With only 2,000 pieces available worldwide, this limited edition embodies the legacy of the company.

The Jack Ryde 100 Year Anniversary Limited Edition 2000T is designed to showcase the design precision and cutting-edge engineering that the brand is capable of, seamlessly fusing form and function into a bed that they claim is a work of art.

What’s in a bed?

On the surface, it looks like a really cozy bed which is cottage-core with its signature blue-check design. We tried the bed at India Design ID, and were pleased to note the many layers that went into the making of this sustainable albeit high-tech bed, in keeping with Scandinavian design aesthetics.

Blue saddle leather corner guards and matching leather lifting handles add to its refined and cohesive aesthetic. The middle mattress, embellished with a hand-embroidered signature, is a personal touch that acknowledges its family history and celebrated artistry. Bronze accents and a distinctive signature plate on the base further elevates the design, serving as a tribute to Jack Ryde’s legacy and visionary spirit.

Originally launched in 1978, the Hästens 2000T redefined sleep luxury as “The Bed of Tomorrow.” It was also the first bed from Hästens to introduce the iconic Blue Check pattern, which debuted at a prestigious Stockholm Furniture Fair and has since become a symbol of Swedish design excellence.

The Blue Check design, a hallmark of Hästens’ dedication to quality, remains a symbol of the brand’s excellence. Jack Ryde’s revolutionary vision not only challenged industry conventions but also redefined both the aesthetic and functional standards of the sleep industry.

What’s with the blue check?

Jack Ryde, an arts and design enthusiast, was keen to introduce a distinct high-quality pattern to represent the brand. In 1978, he designed the Hästens Blue Check, and launched it at a furniture trade show in Sweden. The eye-catching design immediately ran into criticism from the Swedish press. The fresh blue-and-white-checkered pattern stood at odds with the 1970s fashion of brown, greens and orange; totally different from anything ever seen on a bed before. The pattern, however, stuck on, and gained popularity. Jack Ryde challenged, and consequently altered, the status quo and the traditional look and function of beds.

Evolving from this legacy, the Hästens 2000T has consistently been known for working on sleep innovation. Handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, every layer of the bed is designed to optimize body contouring and deliver superior pressure relief. A state-of-the-art spring system provides independent spring movement, ensuring exceptional support, unrivalled comfort, and enhanced airflow for a refreshing sleep experience.
