In a couple of weeks from now, on April 3, Porsche Golf Cup is set to take place in India for the first time in history. The tournament will tee off from Mumbai on April 3, and will subsequently move on to Delhi and Bengaluru. The first game will be played at the Willingdon Sports Club, one of India’s prestigious golf courses in Mumbai and then move to Delhi (April 10-11) at the iconic Delhi Golf Club. The next tournament will be held Bengaluru on May 8-9 at the Prestige Golfshire Club. The winner of the three tournaments from each city will face off against each other at an undisclosed mystery location to be crowned India champion.

History of the cup

Dating back to 1988, the Porsche Golf Cup was first held in Germany and has grown to become a prominent customer series in golf. With its entry into India, this tournament brings together two passions — Porsche and golf — offering participants an unparalleled experience that blends sportsmanship, luxury, and Porsche’s commitment to excellence.

Golf is a premium sport in India. The cost of membership fees, the price of an entire kit and other factors ensure only the crème de la crème enjoy access to it on most occasions. However, recently, due to an interest in the game, and several schools regularly introducing it in its programme, it has begun enjoying a younger audience as well. Players such as Aditi Ashok, who made her Olympics debut in 2016 and has been a significant presence since, have done a lot to encourage players.

On the other hand, companies such as Porsche play a hand in encouraging the sudden love for the game in corporate India.  The golf cup, one of the oldest world series that Porsche holds for customers, is its attempt to deliver a luxury lifestyle to its patrons that goes beyond driving. Held in rare golf courses across the world, it is a a place to build an inspiring community, that shares a common love for the sport and the car. Regular updates about its international events are to be found on a dedicated app; along with tutorials and tournament news.

The series will be hosted at some of the finest golf courses in India, providing a unique and unforgettable experience for all participants. The Prestige Golf Course for instance, is a 275-acre premiere golf course and managed by Troon Golf, one of the world’s biggest golf companies. Designed by renowned golf architect Bob Hunt, it’s a medium-hard course to play on, with a slope rating of 137.

Elite golf circles such as the Porsche Golf Cup entering India is further proof of luxury car brands vying for Indian customers and catering to their interests, a trend that is only set to increase in the next few years. Just in 2024, Porsche hit a record sales milestone, with a four figure sale of vehicles of 1006 for the first time. It also announced plans for new centres in Indore, Jaipur and Lucknow at the India premiere of the Macan BEV and Taycan at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 held in Delhi.

“After a strong 2023, we are happy to have exceeded this with an even bigger 2024, selling more than a thousand cars for the first time,” said Manolito Vujicic, Brand Director, Porsche India, as reported on their website.

The announcement is exciting for both the golfing community as well as Porsche patrons. It is a sign for more involvement of the iconic company in India, as it spreads its roots here. It promises an unparalleled experience, one that can match the cars that the company is famous for.
