There are artists who paint landscapes, and then there are those who seem to translate the very soul of a place onto canvas. Paresh Maity belongs emphatically to the latter category. For decades, the celebrated Indian contemporary artist has travelled across continents with a restless curiosity, absorbing the moods of rivers, deserts, coastlines and cities with the sensitivity of both a traveller and a storyteller. In his latest solo exhibition Luminous Terrains, presented by Art Alive Gallery, that lifelong dialogue with nature and geography unfolds once again in a spectacular new body of work that celebrates the diversity of landscapes stretching from India to Europe.

Arriving after the resounding success of his previous exhibition, Infinite Light at Bikaner House in 2022, this new presentation marks Maity’s next large scale public showcase, and one that promises to be both visually immersive and intellectually engaging. The exhibition is accompanied by the launch of a publication dedicated to the artist, featuring thoughtful contributions from noted scholars and writers including Partha Mitter and Kishore Singh, further situating Maity’s work within the broader discourse of contemporary art.

In a press statement, Paresh Maity, Artist says, “For me, nature is represented through my landscapes. I keep going back to places, again and again, to gain a deeper understanding, a deeper meaning, a deeper philosophy of
nature, captured with the help of light and colour, something that changes not by the hour but by the minute. Even though I have been painting landscapes for five decades now, they have kept evolving as paintings.”

At the heart of Luminous Terrains lies the artist’s enduring fascination with the emotional and ecological character of landscapes. Few contemporary painters have travelled with quite the same fervour as Maity, whose journeys across regions and cultures often become catalysts for artistic reflection. His canvases capture not merely topography but atmosphere, the shifting relationship between light, colour and environment that defines each location. The tranquil waters of Dal Lake in Srinagar, the shimmering lagoons of Venice, the sacred flow of the Ganges River through the ghats of Varanasi, the sun drenched charm of the French Riviera, the vast deserts of Rajasthan and the rugged natural drama of Madhya Pradesh all find expression in this sweeping artistic journey.

Maity’s practice has long been marked by experimentation, extending beyond painting into mixed media, sculpture and installations. Yet across these varied approaches, one theme remains constant: a deeply personal relationship with nature. For the artist, landscapes are not passive subjects but living presences, spaces where spiritual reflection and visual beauty converge.

In a similar press statement, Kishore Singh, Writer & Curator says, “In this exhibition, Paresh pays ode to Claude Monet and Edouard Manet, to Vincent van Gogh, Pierre Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro, not borrowing but building on their foundations to offer in these suites of paintings an Indian interpretation and likely conclusion of light and colour. The light is different in his Venice paintings and those of the South of France, milder, crisper, clearer, almost translucent. The Indian series has more intensity, light filtered through dust, becoming almost tangible, something to be felt and not just seen.”

Equally compelling is the sense of movement that courses through many of Maity’s canvases. His paintings often carry an unmistakable momentum, where sweeping brushstrokes, layered pigments and radiant colour fields create a feeling of action and vitality. Rivers appear to flow beyond the edges of the frame, skies seem to expand with light, and landscapes vibrate with the pulse of natural energy. Yet within this apparent dynamism lies a deeper stillness. Maity’s works suggest that energy itself can be meditative; that within motion there exists a quiet centre of balance. The viewer is invited to experience this duality, where action and contemplation coexist, and where the vibrant force of nature becomes a pathway to reflection.

Indeed, Maity often speaks of travel as a form of artistic pilgrimage. Each journey becomes a process of observation and introspection, where fleeting moments of light, shifting skies and the rhythm of water are quietly absorbed before finding their way onto canvas. In this sense, the works gathered in Luminous Terrains function almost like pages from an illustrated travel diary, each composition capturing a moment of encounter between artist and environment.

What ultimately distinguishes Maity’s landscapes is their sense of luminosity, an almost radiant quality that transforms familiar places into poetic visions. Colours shimmer, horizons breathe and natural elements appear to pulse with quiet vitality. The result is not simply a depiction of geography but an invitation to experience the world through the artist’s eyes, where every river, lagoon and desert carries its own emotional resonance. With Luminous Terrains, Paresh Maity once again reminds viewers that landscapes are far more than scenic backdrops. They are living narratives of culture, ecology and memory, rendered luminous through the language of art.
