BMW has brought the new 2 Series Gran Coupe to India, with prices starting at ₹46.90 lakh for the standard variant and ₹48.90 lakh for the M Sport Pro version. The sedan will be locally assembled at BMW’s Chennai plant, with deliveries beginning immediately.

This second-generation model enters a competitive premium compact sedan segment, taking on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine, Audi A3, and Toyota Camry. BMW has opted for a petrol-only strategy this time, equipping both variants with a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 156 hp and 230 Nm of torque. Performance figures include a 0-100 kmph time of 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 230 kmph.

The new model has grown slightly compared to its predecessor – it’s now 20mm longer at 4,546mm and 25mm taller at 1,445mm. Design highlights include BMW’s illuminated kidney grille, adaptive LED headlights, and redesigned taillights with vertical LED elements. The M Sport Pro variant adds sportier styling touches like larger air intakes, high-gloss shadow line trim, and 18-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels.

BMW has specifically tuned the suspension for Indian road conditions, including a slight increase in ground clearance. The chassis has been reinforced for better rigidity, and drivers can access a Sport Boost function through the steering wheel paddles for sharper power delivery when needed.

Inside, the 2 Series Gran Coupe features BMW’s latest curved display running iDrive 9, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The cabin uses sustainable Veganza upholstery in Mocha or Oyster shades, paired with a 205-watt Harman Kardon sound system. Standard equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, head-up display with augmented view, and customizable ambient lighting.

Technology features are comprehensive for the segment. The BMW Digital Key Plus allows smartphone unlocking and can be shared with multiple users – up to 17 on iOS or 4 on Android. Parking Assistant Plus provides surround-view cameras and a reversing assistant that memorises the last 50 meters driven. Safety equipment includes dynamic stability control, lane change warning, collision warning systems, and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

The car comes in four exterior colours: Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Portimao Blue Metallic, Black Sapphire Metallic, and Alpine White. BMW offers various service packages starting from 3 years/40,000 km, with warranty extensions available up to 10 years. Financing through BMW Financial Services starts at ₹35,000 per month, including guaranteed buyback options.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe positions itself as BMW’s entry point into the luxury sedan market, offering the brand’s latest technology and design language at a relatively accessible price point. While ₹46.90 lakh isn’t exactly budget-friendly, local assembly helps keep it competitive against similarly positioned rivals.

For buyers looking at premium compact sedans, the 2 Series Gran Coupe brings BMW’s driving dynamics and technology in a package that’s more attainable than the larger 3 Series, though it faces stiff competition from established players in this segment.
