Tudor Reinvents The Ranger

The Ranger moves into its next chapter—sharper, quieter and built for every kind of frontier

Some watches are born in ateliers. Others are born in the wild. Tudor’s Ranger belongs to the latter. It’s a watch that is shaped by the quiet resolve of the explorers who rely on it. For decades, the Ranger has been the brand’s purest expression of a purpose-built tool watch. In 2025, that legacy evolved with the newly-expanded Ranger line-up—introducing a compact 36mm case and a crisp, elemental Dune White dial that feels almost sculpted from the landscapes it honours. This is the Ranger, refined and ready for the next frontier.

From Greenland’s Ice Fields To The Sands Of Empty Quarter

The Ranger’s origins date back to 1929 when Hans Wilsdorf registered the name “Ranger,” folding an air of adventurous spirit into Tudor’s young watchmaking universe. The design we recognise today fully emerged in the 1960s: a clean dial, four oversized Arabic numerals at cardinal points, and hands with unmistakable character, the vocabulary of exploration made visible.

But the watch’s defining chapter was written in the 1950s during the British North Greenland Expedition. For two years, scientists braved temperatures that plunged far below -50°C, their Tudor Oyster Prince watches strapped over heavy parkas, lubricated with special Arctic oils. When the team returned, one explorer wrote to Tudor that his watch “maintained remarkable precision” and never once required manual winding. It was the ultimate endorsement.

Fast forward to today, and the Ranger is still doing what it does best: going where few dare to. Its modern home is the Dakar Rally, where Tudor partners with the world’s most extreme endurance race. In Saudi Arabia’s Empty Quarter—a place of zero population, blistering heat and endless dunes—failure is not an option. The new Dune White dial feels like a reverent nod to this landscape, a minimalistic hue that mirrors the stark beauty of the desert while elevating the Ranger’s rugged aesthetic to something quietly elegant.

The Beauty Of Simplicity

The new Ranger finds its power in precision and restraint. Now offered in 36mm and 39mm, its satin-brushed 316L steel case is all quiet confidence, with matte surfaces, clean geometry and a silhouette that feels intentional. The brushed bezel catches light with a soft, utilitarian shimmer, framing a domed dial available in grained black or the serene new Dune White. Both play with texture in a way that feels understated yet undeniably tactile. In true field-watch spirit, the hour markers are painted, a nod to the origins of tool timekeeping and a choice that allows the Grade X1 Swiss Super-LumiNova to glow with an even, velvety clarity after dark. The Ranger hands remain unmistakable: broad, highly legible, and anchored by the signature burgundy-tipped seconds hand, a whisper of colour in an otherwise disciplined aesthetic.

Within the case beats a movement built to endure and excel. The Manufacture Calibres MT5400 (36mm) and MT5402 (39mm) are COSC-certified work-horses, muscular in architecture and modern in materials. With a variable-inertia balance, a non-magnetic silicon balance spring, a traversing bridge for stability, and a 70-hour power reserve, they are designed to brave extreme weather condition.

Constructed For The Journey Wherever It Goes

True to its heritage, the Ranger still feels closest to its origins when in motion. The steel bracelet that’s entirely satin-brushed, is equipped with the T-fit clasp. This lets wearers adjust the bracelet length across five positions without tools. Whether you’re crossing microclimates, layering sleeves, or simply indulging in comfort, the adjustment is seamless.

For purists, the alternative is a triumph of craft: a single-piece fabric strap woven on 19th-century Jacquard looms by the storied Julien Faure in France. Its earth-toned palette and tactile robustness capture the romance of expedition gear while feeling decidedly modern on the wrist.

A Modern Classic For Those Who Dare

Tudor’s “born to dare” philosophy is a tribute to explorers, engineers and everyday wearers who choose function over flash, substance over spectacle. With its uncompromising approach to engineering, the updated Ranger feels timeless and timely. The Ranger remains a celebration of essentials: clarity, durability and quiet courage. This is a watch for anyone who believes that the world is still vast and still worth discovering.
