Every year in September, Apple transforms itself into something more than a tech giant, it reminds its audience at its grandest stage of its legacy and how it plans to move ahead shaping the next level of connectivity, and communication. With Tim Cook at the helm, Apple has proved that the world is not enough when it comes to innovations, and creating benchmarks for its rivals. Last night, Cook unveiled the new iPhone 17 series that is build on the success if its last years cousin. So for you Apple aficionados, here’s everything you need to know about the new iPhone 17 compared to iPhone 16 and whether it’s worth the buy or just hype.
iPhone 17 stands at 149mm to 16 that stands at 147mm, and comes with a 6.3 inch display, compared to the 6.1 inch on iPhone 16. It is being offered with a 120Hz refresh rate that can go down to 1Hz in always-on mode for efficiency. Another massive upgrade is its 3000nits peak brightness. It should also be noted that iPhone 16 reached up to 2,000nits for outdoor use, and 1600nits for HDR content while only offering 60Hz.
Powering the iPhone 17 is the A19 chip built with Taiwan Semiconductor Munfacturing Company (TSMC) with a 6-core CPU, and a 5-core GPU. Apple claims the new chip is faster than the A18 chip in the iPhone 16. Another major update comes in the display that is made up of ‘Ceramic Shield 2’, making it three times more scratch-resistant than the previous versions. For a camera setup there are two 48mp cameras, one is an ultra wide censor, and the other is an optical telephoto censor.
Also, Apple has also updated the front camera which now has an 18-megapixel square sensor, allowing users to take selfies in various formats while also supporting Center Stage for calls. This compared to a 12mp TrueDepth camera in the iPhone 16 that only had a tap to zoom feature.
When Apple debuted the iPhone 16, it came in three variants: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB; however, the iPhone 17 has only been revealed in two variants: 256GB and 512GB. It should also be mentioned that the iPhone 16 ran iOS 18, which is upgradeable to iOS 26, which will be released as a free software update on September 15.
The new iPhone 17 has a larger battery size of 3692 mAh to iPhone 16’s 3561 mAh battery. So, the new version of the iPhone can reach 50% battery in 20 minutes to 30 minutes in the previous model.
The iPhone 17 Pro has up to 33 hours of video playback, and up to 30 hours of streamed video playback, while the old iPhone 16 Pro is only good for up to 27 hours video playback, and 22 hours of streamed video playback.
Over the surface, the iPhone 17 Pro may appear to be merely a bump up over its predecessor. Inside, however, is a larger and more significant change for the organisation.
