Icons are not born every day; they are built over the years… They are timeless and imbued with a DNA that stays relevant even as years pass by as the legacy is carried forward. The Dezza Armchair, too, is one such icon known for its unique design ethos that stands out, even after it was first introduced in 1965. Created by celebrated Italian architect and designer, Gio Ponti for Poltrona Frau, the Dezza Armchair marks its 60th anniversary this year. And to celebrate this milestone, the brand has introduced a special limited-edition of 60 pieces showcasing a never-seen-before hand illustration by the designer.

The Dezza 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Armchair is an impressive homage to fine Italian craftsmanship that stands the test of time. Armed with a superior construction, this piece blends rich history with a modern aesthetic, which makes it suited to a contemporary landscape. It’s a highly proportional upholstered armchair, where the squared lines are balanced by the elegant curved armrests that follow the entire profile of the armchair, right up to the legs—giving it a sense of lightness and dynamism. The solid wooden framework is covered in Pelle Frau ColorSphere Impact Less leather—an important initiative showcasing the brand’s commitment towards sustainability. This important achievement is the result of the brand’s forty-year commitment to researching leather and the processes of tanning, finishing and processing, aimed at preserving energy resources, thereby reducing the impact on the environment.

“We are thrilled to present this historic piece from our catalogue in a new guise. Designed exclusively for us by Gio Ponti sixty years ago it has retained timeless modernity. With our re-editions we always try to create and deepen the cultural significance of the original design, offering something truly exclusive that not only enhances the materials and finishes but, above all, celebrates the creative process behind the products,” explains CEO Nicola Coropulis in an official press statement. This luxury armchair also holds immense significance in the Poltrona Frau’s history since it was the company’s first product following its relocation to Tolentino in 1962—a defining moment in the brand’s history ever since. The USP lies in attention to detail, achieved by time-honoured practices where every stitch matters. And this, coupled with cutting-edge technology makes it a modern ergonomic piece of art with a timeless appeal.

The most distinctive trait here is undoubtedly the upholstery pattern, which is available in hues of Panna and Iris according to the brand’s colour palette. It reproduces an original, unpublished illustration by designer Gio Ponti, which features a motif of 26 stylised hands, each different from the other with their unique names such as, the Gloved hand, the Starry Hand, the Rotating Hand, and the Fortune Teller’s hand, among others. These hands are an ode to craftsmanship involved in creating handmade artistic pieces such as the Dezza Armchair. Each piece is accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity, individually numbered, and marked with a metal tag placed on the back of the armchair.
