There are sensible family cars. And then there are family cars that arrive with the subtlety of a tech billionaire kicking the door open and announcing that the future has officially landed. Enter the Tesla Model Y L, unveiled with all the quiet understatement of a rock concert at Ballard Pier, and promptly positioned as the answer to a question nobody asked loudly enough: what if your school run felt like a software update? Let’s begin with the obvious bit. This is not just another stretched SUV with an extra row bolted on as an afterthought. No, this is Tesla doing what Tesla does best, taking something ordinary, in this case the humble family car, and injecting it with enough technology to make your living room feel insecure. Three rows. Six seats. And not the kind where the third row is reserved for people you secretly dislike. Everyone here gets space, actual, usable, adult-sized space, with headroom and legroom that doesn’t require yoga certification.

The second row? Captain seats. Proper ones. With powered armrests, ventilation, heating

The second row? Captain seats. Proper ones. With powered armrests, ventilation, heating, and a one-touch fold mechanism that feels suspiciously like cheating. The third row, often the automotive equivalent of economy class, gets power recline, climate control, and the same one-touch theatrics. In short, nobody is drawing the short straw anymore, which is either a triumph of engineering or a disaster for family politics. Now, because it’s a Tesla, the numbers read like they’ve been written by someone who doesn’t entirely believe in limitations. Up to 681 kilometres of range. That’s WLTP, yes, but still, it’s enough to make range anxiety feel like an outdated superstition. Zero to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, which is frankly ridiculous for something designed to carry six people, a week’s worth of luggage, and possibly a disagreement about where to stop for snacks. And speaking of luggage, 2,539 litres of cargo space means you could, in theory, move house. Or at the very least, avoid that second trip everyone dreads.

On the road, Tesla claims calm. And for once, it might not be exaggerating

On the road, Tesla claims calm. And for once, it might not be exaggerating. Acoustic glass, an updated suspension system, adaptive damping, and a chassis that actively works to iron out India’s finest interpretations of road surfaces. The 19-inch Machina wheels look the part, but more importantly, the electronic damping shocks adjust in real time, which means the car is constantly thinking about the road so you don’t have to. It’s like having a co-driver who actually knows what they’re doing. Inside, it’s less car, more command centre. An 18-speaker audio system with a subwoofer turns traffic jams into private concerts. And because this is Tesla, connectivity isn’t a feature, it’s the entire point. Live traffic visualisation, satellite maps, live camera views, and in-car streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and Netflix. Yes, you can sit in your car and watch a film while it charges, which sounds absurd until you realise you’re absolutely going to do it.

Ah yes, charging. The bit everyone asks about with the enthusiasm of a tax audit. Tesla

Ah yes, charging. The bit everyone asks about with the enthusiasm of a tax audit. Tesla, to its credit, seems to have noticed. Five Supercharger stations already operational across India, with 20 Superchargers and 14 Wall Connectors. And plans for seven more stations linking the country’s major cities, from Delhi to Mumbai to Bengaluru. The idea is simple: make charging less of a chore and more of a background activity. Add to that the home charging program, and suddenly the petrol pump starts to feel like a relic from another era. Now, the part where wallets begin to sweat. The Model Y L starts at ₹61,99,000, with monthly payments from ₹49,000, and deliveries kicking off in June 2026. There are, of course, other variants for those who enjoy spreadsheets. A Rear-Wheel Drive version offering 500 km of range at ₹59,89,000. A Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive stretching to 661 km at ₹67,89,000. But the headline act remains the L Premium All-Wheel Drive, with its 681 km range and 5.0-second sprint time, because subtlety, clearly, is overrated.
