There are boats. And then there are Riva Runabouts. The sort of machines that make you wonder whether engines were invented purely to soundtrack glamorous escapes across Lake Como. Long before superyachts became floating apartment blocks, these handcrafted mahogany speedboats carried film stars, royalty and industrialists through the glittering waters of Italy with effortless style. They weren’t merely boats; they were moving sculptures polished to within an inch of perfection. Frederique Constant clearly understands this romance because, since 2009, it has devoted an entire collection to these icons of la dolce vita. The partnership became official in 2013 with the Riva Historical Society, preserving the legacy of one of Italy’s greatest design triumphs. Every two years another Runabout appears, and for 2026, Frederique Constant returns with the Classics Runabout Automatic GMT, a travel companion that captures the elegance of varnished timber decks and open Mediterranean waters without requiring you to own a yacht.

The new Classics Runabout Automatic GMT arrives in a beautifully proportioned 42mm polished stainless steel case, striking a balance between contemporary wrist presence and timeless restraint. Slim, elegantly sculpted lugs flow naturally into the strap, while the polished surfaces mirror the gleaming chrome fittings found aboard the legendary Riva speedboats. A neatly proportioned crown positioned at 3 o’clock maintains the watch’s clean profile while providing intuitive adjustment of the local time and GMT functions.

Frederique Constant offers two distinct personalities. Ref. (FC-350RN5B6) wears a deep navy blue dial, evoking the endless waters of the Mediterranean, while Ref. (FC-350RBR5B6) adopts a rich mahogany brown finish, inspired by the beautifully varnished teak decks of the historic Riva boats carefully preserved by the Riva Historical Society. Both dials abandon the guilloché patterns of previous generations in favour of vertically satin-brushed finishing that remarkably resembles the parallel timber planks running across a classic Runabout’s foredeck. It is one of those details you may not immediately notice, but once you do, you cannot stop looking at it. Applied hour markers alternate with vintage-style Arabic numerals positioned at 3, 9 and 12 o’clock, each filled with warm beige luminous material reminiscent of aged tritium. Matching rhodium-plated hour and minute hands receive the same vintage-toned lume, creating a harmonious aesthetic beneath the gently curved sapphire crystal.

The dial itself is intelligently organised into three concentric sections. Around the outer edge runs the seconds track, followed by the primary hour chapter ring, while the innermost ring houses the 24-hour GMT scale. A slender GMT hand tipped with a luminous arrow quietly points towards a second time zone, making the watch equally suited to Mediterranean cruising or intercontinental travel. Completing the display is a discreet date aperture positioned neatly at 6 o’clock, preserving the dial’s excellent symmetry.
Inside beats the FC-350 automatic calibre, based on a reliable Sellita movement enhanced with Frederique Constant’s proprietary GMT module. Now, watch enthusiasts will quickly point out that this is a so-called Caller GMT rather than a True Flyer GMT, meaning the independently adjustable hand is the 24-hour indication rather than the local hour. Purists will undoubtedly raise an eyebrow. Travellers, meanwhile, will probably continue enjoying the watch without losing any sleep over it. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) while delivering a 38-hour power reserve.

Turn the watch over and the romance continues. Engraved across the solid caseback is “ONE OF 888”, confirming the exclusivity of each edition. Like every previous Runabout model, each watch is delivered inside a beautifully crafted presentation box accompanied by a miniature wooden Runabout boat, turning the experience into something far more memorable than simply opening another watch box. Visible decoration includes elegant Geneva stripes across both the bridges and oscillating rotor, reflecting the brand’s commitment to combining accessible luxury with traditional Swiss finishing. The two references continue their individual identities right through to the wrist. The FC-350RN5B6 with its ocean-inspired blue dial is paired with a practical black rubber strap secured by a classic pin buckle, reinforcing its sporty nautical character.

Meanwhile, the warmer FC-350RBR5B6 complements its teak-inspired dial with a rich brown genuine leather strap, fastened using a refined folding clasp that further enhances its elegant, vintage-inspired appearance. Limited to 888 pieces per dial, the latest Classics Runabout Automatic GMT continues a tradition that collectors have anticipated every two years since 2009. Much like the legendary Riva boats that inspired it, this is not simply an instrument for measuring time. It is an invitation to slow down, admire fine craftsmanship and perhaps imagine yourself skimming across Lake Como with nothing but polished mahogany, blue water and the sound of a perfectly tuned engine for company.
