Jacob & Co. Mahadev Edition: A Closer Look At The Extraordinary Luxury Watch

Jacob & Co. brings Lord Shiva, his trident and the sound of the damru into a 44mm titanium skeleton watch, glowing blue in the dark

There are watches that tell time, and then there are watches that attempt to compress an entire cosmology onto a 44mm canvas. Jacob & Co., a brand never accustomed to modest gestures, has chosen the latter path with its Mahadev Edition, a timepiece built entirely around the image of Lord Shiva, transforming some of Hinduism’s most powerful symbols into a three-dimensional watchmaking composition rather than a simple decorative dial.

At the centre of the display stands Shiva himself, rendered alongside his trident and damru

At the centre of the display stands Shiva himself, rendered alongside his trident and damru, the small hand-drum whose rhythm is traditionally understood to represent the pulse of creation itself. It is a deliberate choice of imagery: together, the figure and its instruments are meant to evoke cosmic rhythm, energy, and the eternal cycle of creation, preservation and destruction that defines Shiva’s role in Hindu cosmology. The composition is completed by the Om symbol and the sacred mantra “Om Namah Shivaya,” precisely inscribed on the flange at the 6 o’clock position, with the full phrase also present at 8 o’clock on the dial.

By day, the piece reads as an intricate exercise in relief and symbolism

By day, the piece reads as an intricate exercise in relief and symbolism. By night, it becomes something else entirely. Super-LumiNova treatment brings the figure of Shiva and its surrounding elements to life in the dark with a blue glow, a choice of colour intended to symbolise divine energy and spiritual awakening, a fitting effect for a deity so closely associated with meditation, transformation and the awakening of consciousness. That same blue carries through to the flange and finds its match in a perforated, honeycomb-patterned rubber strap, tying the watch’s spiritual imagery to a distinctly modern, technical aesthetic.

Housing all of this is a 44mm titanium case, chosen for the lightness the metal offers at scale

Housing all of this is a 44mm titanium case, chosen for the lightness the metal offers at scale, since a dial this densely composed demands a case substantial enough to give it room to breathe. Turn the watch over, and the engineering matches the ambition of the dial. The sapphire crystal caseback reveals the JCAM02, a manual-winding skeleton calibre finished with vertical graining, clous de Paris guilloché and perlage decoration, the kind of traditional hand-finishing techniques that watchmakers reserve for movements meant to be looked at as much as wound. The calibre delivers a 48-hour power reserve, framed by a 60-minute track running around the dial’s outer periphery, with baton-shaped hour and minute hands keeping the time-telling function legible amid the sculptural detail surrounding it.

. The strap is rubber in a matching blue, closed with a pin

Every remaining detail has been considered with the same intent. The strap is rubber in a matching blue, closed with a pin buckle finished in titanium to align with the case material throughout. Nothing on the watch feels incidental, from the choice of luminous colour to the placement of the mantra to the metal chosen for the smallest clasp component. What makes the Mahadev Edition notable is not merely its subject matter, but its refusal to treat that subject matter as ornamentation.

Jacob & Co. has built entire collections around astronomical motifs, automotive icons and mechanical spectacle, but here the brand’s usual maximalism has been redirected toward something considerably older than any of its previous inspirations: an image of the divine that has anchored devotion and philosophy for millennia. The result is a watch that asks to be read rather than simply worn, its glow in the dark less a technical flourish than an extension of its central idea, that awakening, like the movement ticking beneath it, happens quietly, and in the dark, long before it becomes visible to anyone else.
