Launched in 2005, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean has become one of the frontrunners when it comes to dive watches. The collection’s USP lies in the fact that these timepieces are highly functional tool watches—built for rough terrains and deep dives—honouring the Swiss luxury watchmaker’s longstanding legacy of crafting timekeepers that celebrate their marine heritage. They are steeped in tradition yet showcase innovation when it comes to using new materials and the latest technology for the movements, offering unparalleled precision. And this year, as the Seamaster Planet Ocean celebrates its 20th anniversary, Omega has introduced two new models in black ceramic, replete with the world time complication—a first for this line.

The new Seamaster Planet Ocean models follow the aesthetic of the Deep Black range, and as the name suggests, have a gothic appeal in every aspect. Measuring 45.5mm, both the models come with a brushed case in black ceramic [ZrO2], topped with a black ceramic bezel, featuring a laser-ablated diving scale polished in positive relief. Ideal for globetrotters and people who are fond of mechanical complications, these robust watches shine the spotlight on the world timer function—represented through a topographic map. Here, a representation of the continents is produced on a grade-5 titanium surface, with a view over the North Pole, created via laser-ablation and varnish… And the results are truly outstanding as the level of detailing brings the watch to life and the generous case size also does justice to the representation of the Earth’s geography. This circular map is surrounded by a 24-hour chapter ring, dividing the night and day hours (night indicated in black and day indicated in a white or grey shade).

The outer section of the dial is produced in a DLC black colour with a laser-ablated and polished honeycomb pattern. It features diamond-brushed indexes filled with white Super-LumiNova for unhindered legibility even in the most low-light conditions. There is also an outer ring with a turquoise or grey varnish for both variants bearing the names of different cities including Bienne, where Omega’s HQ is located, allowing the wearer to track the day across multiple time zones with ease. It also features luminous arrow-shaped hands and a trapezoidal date window positioned at six o’clock. A major point to note is that despite the generous case dimensions, the watch weights only 143g, thanks to the ceramic framework.

These new Seamaster Planet Ocean timepieces are driven by the automatic Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8938, supplying the watch with an energy reserve of at least 60 hours. This certified Master Chronometer is approved by METAS and is resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss. It is fitted with a free sprung-balance with silicon balance spring, and features rhodium plated finish with Geneva waves in arabesque—visible through the exhibition caseback.
