Jaipur Watch Company’s Brides of Jaipur Collection Glows with Gemstone Grandeur

Combining Jaipur's royal traditions with contemporary elegance, the Brides of Jaipur collection marks the brand’s foray into women’s watches

October 21, 2024

It felt almost like a royal Jaipur wedding and a select group of Indian media and Jaipur’s glitterati dressed in festive finery dressed like baraatis at the grand venue. Hosted by the family of Gaurav Mehta, the founder and CEO of the Jaipur Watch Company, the prestigious Sawai Man Mahal in Rambagh Palace, Jaipur turned into the grand wedding venue and we were greeted with festivities befitting a opulent Marwari wedding featuring brides and grooms, baraatis, dancers, horses, palanquins, classic cars, jewellery and, of course, the latest watches from their Brides of Jaipur collection.

Founded in 2013, Jaipur Watch Company, is pushing the boundaries of horology with exceptional timepieces inspired by Mehta’s passion for vintage watches, colonial-era coins, stamps and the game of polo that Jaipur is famous for. Combining modern style with timeless elegance, the India’s premier micro-luxury watch brand now enters the lucrative women’s jewellery watch category with the Brides of Jaipur collection. The company also launched a high decibel digital campaign featuring friend of the brand, Malaika Arora.

The launch of this special collection in Jaipur was a celebration of art, heritage, cultural and culinary traditions of Jaipur. The collection is inspired by Rajasthan, and particularly Jaipur. Designed for the wedding market, the new bejewelled line of women’s watches is intricately crafted and draws inspiration from Rajasthan’s rich jewellery traditions and centuries-old craftsmanship. Honouring the timeless tradition of gifting brides with jewellery on their wedding day, the collection offers a contemporary twist for modern brides.

Timeless Mirage, the cuff watch, from Brides of Jaipur

Jaipur, with its royal history and majestic architecture, serves as the inspiration for this collection. Each watch from the collection is a masterpiece, inspired by Jaipur’s rich architecture, as well as the city’s rich jewellery craftsmanship traditions, including filigree, embossing, mother of pearl, enamelling, latkans, etc.

The collection is a work of art that capture the essence of a regal era. The watches are adorned with intricate patterns reminiscent of the stunning jaali work found at the royal residence and former administrative headquarters of the rulers of the Jaipur State-famously known as the City Palace. The geometric designs, floral motifs, and interlacing arabesques of the jaali work at the City Palace are particularly noteworthy as pieces of infinite artistry.

The inspiration of this intricate jaali work is evident on some of the watch dials. Other watch faces feature delicate filigree, inspired by the ornate motifs seen in the historic Hawa Mahal, and other architectural landmarks of Jaipur. For example, the Blossom Radiance watch showcases an engraved case, while the Golden Embrace piece features a jaali-patterned strap. Another charming timepiece, the Timeless Mirage merges mother-of-pearl, enamel, and floral patterns, while Regal Majesty is adorned with a latkan motif. The radiant gemstones—rubies and emeralds—reflect the vibrant bridal lehengas, while gold accents evoke the timeless elegance of Kundan and Meenakari craftsmanship. Brides of Jaipur captures the opulence and emotional richness of Rajasthan’s weddings in every luxurious detail.

Perfect for a bride who dreams of a wedding as timeless as Jaipur, the Brides of Jaipur Watch Collection captures that vision of artistry and tradition, offering a keepsake that embodies the joy and memories of a bride’s special day.

On the sidelines of the Brides of Jaipur launch, Outlook Luxe, caught up with the affable Gaurav Mehta, MD & CEO, Jaipur Watch Company to speak about the new collection and more.

Edited excerpts:

1. Tell us more about your latest collection, the Brides of Jaipur, that marks your entry into the world of weddings with women’s watches.

The Brides of Jaipur collection was in the making for almost two years and it was only yesterday that we could complete it and showcase it to you all. It all started when Sharmila Sahai, ex-CEO of Timex Group, visited Jaipur Watch Company and praised our work, but pointed out we were missing out on the women’s market. That’s when I realised that we had not done anything for the womens category, other than two watches, and a few gender-neutral ones. Sahai also highlighted Jaipur’s rich jewellery traditions, and given our brand’s name, it became clear that creating a women’s collection was a natural next step. There were a lot of challenges when we started off—our previous use of stainless steel and 18k gold wasn’t suited for this kind of generous gem-setting. I went to all the local jewellers for a solution and they pointed out that only 18k gold would give us the desired result as stainless steel, silver or brass won’t achieve the finish we were looking for. I discussed with some metallurgists independently who suggested using brass as the base metal and adding some materials to make a special alloy. This allowed us to have the flexibility of brass. Meanwhile we worked on the design using different styles of jewellery such as gemstones, meenakari, filigree, embossing, engraving, etc. You can see these elements reflected in each piece of the Brides of Jaipur collection.

2. Tell us about Jaipur Watch Company being the only watch brand in the world to receive a license from ISRO to make a new collection of watches.

We have signed the MOU just a few days back and we have been granted the license by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to use their logo and mission names for our Missions of ISRO line. After months of hard work and navigating through various departments for close to six months, we are very proud to have finally received the nod from them. I was confident that we would get the license and we already started working on the prototypes. You will see use of high-tech materials like titanium and carbon fibre, as well as some unique complications in this new collection. The first watches are expected to be ready in the next eight to nine months.

3. Name seven watches that have made history for Jaipur Watch Company.

If I had to choose seven standout watches from Jaipur Watch Company’s journey over the past eleven years, I’d start with the Imperial Collection, where it all began. These watches featured half silver one-rupee coins from the British era. Next is Jumping Hour, iconic for moving beyond coin watches, and introducing complications. The Raja Ravi Varma collection, although non-coin watch, has garnered massive interest from collectors. The Baagh Collection is my favourite, as it transformed the company’s fortunes. The Postage Stamp collection is also unique, featuring a real paper stamp dial that connects with Indian history. The more recent Rajasthan Polo collection stands out for its technical innovation of flipping the dial and custom engraving on the reverse plate. Lastly, my favourite from the newly launched Brides of Jaipur collection is Timeless Mirage, the cuff watch, with its delicate enameling, mother of pearl, brass inlay, and engraving.
