Jewellery That Can Heal You

Do gemstones and crystals hold the power to heal? Many believe they do. In this article, we delve into the world of healing jewellery with insights from Mamta Gupta, co-founder of URJA by Zariin and Zariin Jewelry, who shares how these precious stones are not just adornments, but tools that can soothe the mind and uplift the spirit

I have always worn jewellery as an accessory. Nothing more, nothing less. For me, it’s about finishing a look, adding a hint of shine, maybe a bit of personality. Jewellery has always lived firmly in the aesthetic realm. That, of course, isn’t true for everyone. There are people who wear jewellery with intention. To steady their nerves. To attract abundance. To feel protected or aligned. I’ve known a few such people for years, friends who swear by certain stones. It has never been a point of debate between us, largely because belief is personal territory and not one I’ve ever felt compelled to enter.

What Is Healing Jewellery?

So when a few contemporary jewellery pieces by Urja by Zariin caught my eye, my interest was purely visual. The pieces felt modern, elegant, and easy to wear. It was only later that I learned they were designed with therapeutic intent. Curiosity took over, and I wanted to understand the thinking behind them. That curiosity led me to a conversation with Mamta Gupta, one of the co-founders of Urja by Zariin. She spoke about the label not as a belief system to be imposed, but as something meant to be experienced. As she put it, “Urja was born out of a deep desire to merge the power of healing crystals with the beauty of jewellery, creating pieces that not only enhance style but also support well-being.”

Urja is an extension of Zariin, the jewellery label Mamta co-founded with her sister Vidhi Gupta after the success of what Mamta fondly calls their “first baby.” Vidhi serves as Creative Director and the design force behind the brand, while Mamta oversees marketing and global sales. Together, they have built Zariin on a design language rooted in Indian techniques and artisanal craftsmanship, while remaining unmistakably contemporary. Founded in 2010, Zariin today retails across more than 21 countries and over 200 stores worldwide. Urja builds on that foundation, adding a subtle, more introspective dimension to the brand. Whether one approaches it as healing jewellery or simply as thoughtfully made adornment, it marks an intersection where belief, design, and personal meaning meet.

The Beginning Of A Healing Journey

The idea for Urja took shape during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period defined by uncertainty and inward reflection. Like many others, Mamta and Vidhi found themselves looking inward rather than outward. Mamta describes that phase as deeply personal. “My partner (my sister) Vidhi and I were on a similar journey, embracing yoga, meditation and intentional living, seeking a deeper connection with ourselves,” she recalls. “At this point, we were introduced to crystals during a chakra healing session. The session itself was invigorating and powerful, but it left us intrigued with crystals as they were an intrinsic part of the healing.”

That moment led to two parallel developments for the duo. “Two things happened as a result,” Mamta says. “Vidhi adopted the moonstone crystal manifesting motherhood, and we created a chakra balancing jewellery collection called Balance in Zariin.”

What followed gave their curiosity a more tangible shape. Vidhi soon began her journey into motherhood, a development the sisters personally connected to that period of intention setting. Around the same time, customer responses to the Balance collection began to surface. Mamta recalls how clients wrote in, attributing calmer temperaments, better sleep, and emotional steadiness to the jewellery. These stories did not position crystals as medical solutions in their minds, but they did open up further questions. As Mamta puts it, “We knew that there is more to crystals that needs to be uncovered and studied, and shared with the community. That is how Urja was born.”

Jewellery That Makes You Look Good And Heals At The Same Time?

The idea of healing jewellery itself is not new to India. For centuries, gemstones here have played a dual role as ornament and talisman. Navratna jewellery has long been associated with planetary balance, while stones like ruby, emerald, or pearl have traditionally been prescribed for emotional or physical harmony. These practices existed alongside Ayurveda and spiritual rituals, embedded in cultural memory rather than modern wellness language. What has changed is the context. In recent years, healing jewellery made with natural gemstones and crystals has surged in popularity, especially in urban and globalised spaces. While scientific research validating therapeutic claims remains limited, the category continues to grow, driven by personal testimonies, spiritual belief systems, and a broader cultural shift toward holistic living.

Which leads to the obvious question. Does belief determine whether healing jewellery works?

Is There Healing Without Faith?

Mamta’s response is nuanced. Faith, she says, is helpful but not essential. As she explains, “Belief isn’t really a prerequisite, but it does deepen the experience.” She shifts the focus away from the object itself and toward the wearer. “Many people come to Urja simply because they are drawn to a piece, its design, or the feeling it gives them. Over time, as they begin to engage with the rituals, the language of intention and the practice of pausing with themselves, something shifts.” What matters most, she suggests, is consistency. “Healing, in this sense, is less about what you believe and more about how consistently you show up for yourself.”

Different stones take on different roles. Some are associated with calm and clarity, others with confidence, protection, or new beginnings. These associations shape how Urja designs its jewellery, starting at the sourcing stage. As Mamta explains, “We work only with 100 percent natural crystals, selected for both their energetic properties and their ability to integrate beautifully into everyday jewellery.” She then goes on to outline the stones most commonly used by the label and their traditional associations.

But while these associations are central, Mamta is clear that design is what allows healing jewellery to exist in everyday life. “Design is what brings together the world of wellness and spirituality,” she says. “Urja jewels are not just meant to be worn during meditation. They are created to be seamlessly built into our wardrobe, whether work, travel, or everyday moments. Design is the bridge that makes Urja a label of wearable wellness.” The design process itself begins with intention. “We begin with the intention, what emotional state, energy or life theme do we want to support,” Mamta explains. “Once the energetic purpose is clear, the design process begins. The role of design is to translate that energy into something beautiful, wearable and timeless.” Ritual extends into the making of the jewellery as well.

Mamta explains that Urja consciously incorporates energetic cleansing practices into production. “The different crystal combinations that we use have come from working closely with healers and practitioners,” she says. “We have built rituals into our jewellery creation process. This includes moments of energetic cleansing such as saging and crystal charging, where the stones are gently cleared and re-energised before the final stages of creation.” When it comes to healing jewellery, it’s natural to imagine that it speaks primarily to a particular kind of wearer, someone already familiar with crystals, ritual, or spiritual practice. In reality, however, Urja’s customer base is more varied than that.

Mamta notes that some customers are deeply familiar with crystal healing, while others come to the brand during moments of transition. “While a certain type of customer does gravitate towards healing jewellery during uncertain times or moments of low,” she explains, “there is also a sizable group that is already well informed about crystals and faith based practices and is now drawn to our designs as a break from traditional crystal jewellery.” And, of course, there are those like me who buy and wear jewellery purely for its aesthetic appeal.

This growing interest is also visible at the highest levels of fashion. Global luxury houses have begun incorporating astrology, talismanic symbols, and crystal references into fine jewellery. Last year, Louis Vuitton drew inspiration from crystal healing for its “Color Blossom” collection, reflecting a broader cultural hunger for meaning beyond aesthetics.

Holistic Wellbeing Is The New Form Of Luxury

Mamta frames this shift as a redefinition of luxury itself. “Emotional and holistic wellbeing has become a new form of luxury,” she says. “In our lives filled with constant chaos, the ability to consciously protect one’s mental and emotional space has become deeply valuable.” Guided by this belief, Mamta hopes Urja by Zariin becomes a trusted companion in people’s lives, empowering them to manifest their most meaningful emotional, physical, and spiritual aspirations, while drawing in energies that enhance clarity, resilience, and well-being.

As for me, I remain where I began. I still don’t wear jewellery to heal or manifest or align my energy. I wear it because I like how it looks. Do I feel happier when I wear Urja by Zariin or Zariin pieces? Absolutely. But is it because of the gemstones? The compliments? Or the love and care that went into making them? I can’t say for sure. All I know is I look good in them. And for now, I guess that’s enough?
