Since the days of the ancient sundial, humanity has been accustomed to reading time upon the reassuring symmetry of a circle. The earliest clocks, and later the wristwatches that accompanied modern civilisation into the 20th century, largely preserved this circular orthodoxy. The round dial, after all, echoed the celestial choreography of the sun and seemed the most natural vessel for the passage of hours. Yet watchmaking, much like architecture or art, periodically rebels against its own conventions. In doing so, it has discovered that form can be as expressive as function.
Enter the rectangular watch, an audacious departure that replaced the eternal curve with clean geometry and disciplined lines. It was a design language that resonated particularly with the modernist spirit of the twentieth century, where elegance was increasingly defined by restraint and proportion rather than ornament. Rectangular cases lent watches a sculptural quality, transforming them from mere instruments of timekeeping into statements of style and personality. Today these timepieces occupy a revered niche in the collector’s world, admired for their heritage, distinctive aesthetics, and enduring cultural influence. With that spirit in mind, Outlook Luxe takes a closer look at five iconic rectangular watches that every serious connoisseur should have on their radar.
Hamilton Classic Boulton

Crafted with understated elegance, the timepiece features a compact 18.7mm x 27mm stainless steel case with a slim 6.9mm profile, giving it a refined presence on the wrist. The silver dial offers a clean and sophisticated backdrop, complemented by nickeled hour and minute hands that enhance readability while maintaining a polished aesthetic, and a second sub dial at 6 o’clock. Powered by a precise quartz movement with a small seconds display, the watch ensures reliable timekeeping in a classic format. A black leather strap equipped with the EasyClick system allows for effortless strap changes, adding versatility to the design. Protecting the dial is a durable mineral crystal, providing clarity and everyday resilience while preserving the watch’s timeless appeal.
Baume & Mercier Hampton Polyptyque Edition – Musée Soulages 10th Anniversary

The 48mm watch has a black, opaline rectangular dial with shades of textured black that change depending on the light source. The dial features matte, semi-matte, sparkling, and diffuse layers, similar to Soulages’ work. Sitting above it are black sword-shaped hands with golden markings on the tips. The rectangular case is sandblasted, and the caseback features a sapphire crystal. The watch is driven by a self-winding ETA 2892-A2 automatic movement with a black oscillating weight engraved with the name Hampton ‘Hommage to Pierre Soulages’, which is visible through the glass crystal caseback. The watch has a 42-hour power reserve and a frequency of 4Hz. It is finished in a black sandblasted alligator strap with a pin buckle system.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Monoface Small Seconds

Elegantly proportioned, the watch is housed in a stainless steel case measuring 40.1 x 24.4 mm with a slender thickness of 7.56 mm, reflecting a refined balance between classic design and contemporary wearability. At its heart beats the manually wound Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 822, delivering reliable precision along with a 42 hour power reserve. The dial stands out with a newly developed “coin stack” guilloché pattern, intricately decorating the centre of both the main dial and the small seconds display, while vertically brushed surfaces add subtle texture and depth. Displaying hours, minutes and small seconds, the watch maintains an elegant simplicity in its timekeeping. With water resistance up to 3 bar, it is suited for everyday sophistication. Completing the piece is an interchangeable black calfskin strap designed by Casa Fagliano, secured with a classic pin buckle, bringing together craftsmanship, comfort and timeless style.

Cartier Tank Cintrée

The platinum model’s case measures 46.3 mm long and 6.03 mm thick, with an extended rectangular shape. The crown features a ruby cabochon at 3 o’clock, commemorating Cartier’s 100th anniversary of the Tank Cintrée, which is made of platinum. The timepiece has a curved design to make it comfortable on the wrist. Sticking with the 1920s style, the timepiece features an eggshell coloured dial with black-printed Roman numerals and minute tracks in the center. There are vintage blued steel apple-shaped hands that indicate hours and minutes. Inside the case is calibre 9780 MC, which is believed to be supplied by Jaeger-LeCoultre, as seen in antique Cintrée versions. With a 36-hour power reserve, calibre 9780 MC is based, with small adjustments, on calibre 849. It is a compact hand-wound ultra-thin movement that has enabled JLC to manufacture its thinnest models, such as the Master Ultra Thin Kingsman knife.
Franck Muller Long Island Evolution 7 Days Power Reserve

With a seven-day power reserve, the entirely skeletonised construction of the watch allows for uninterrupted adoration of the internal mechanism with Arabic hour markers.
