Equal parts urban elegance and coastal calm, this flagship property of the Leela brand is where luxury harmoniously meets thoughtfulness. Whether you’re a business traveller hopping between meetings or a local itching for a weekend indulgence, The Leela Palace knows exactly how to turn ‘a stay’ into an unforgettable experience.

Seafront Elegance In A Thriving Metropolis
The Hotel seamlessly mirrors Chennai’s essence, a city of contrasts where ancient temples meet modern tech hubs. Nestled in the chic Adyar neighbourhood, it offers easy access to urban adventures, yet its tranquil ambiance feels worlds away from the city’s bustle. From the moment you enter, there’s a deliberate nod to sustainability: the thermostat set to an understated 25°C speaks volumes about eco-conscious hospitality. Step into your room, and the soft sea breeze carries a sense of mindful luxury. Then, step onto the balcony. The endless expanse of ocean will hold your gaze, as though time itself has momentarily slowed, offering a soothing reprieve from the fast pace of metropolitan life.
And if business brings you here, the hotel’s sprawling banquet halls and event spaces deliver professional polish without compromising on charm. Here’s what surprises most guests (and me, during a recent stay), beneath its stately chandeliers and glossy floors, this hotel is steeped in history. Opened in 2013 under the vision of Captain CP Krishnan Nair, The Leela Palace was designed to exude timeless opulence. Even after its acquisition by Brookfield Asset Management in 2019, the property hasn’t lost an ounce of its character. From grandiose floral installations to a staff that feels like family, everything still whispers (or rather shouts) old school luxury.

Spaces That Spoil You
Let’s talk rooms, because honestly, they’re an ode to indulgence. Over half of the 325 opulent rooms and suites boast stunning views of the Bay of Bengal. Relax on a king-size bed with coffee in hand, soaking in the waves. The hotel seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, with Chettinad columns, Rajasthani mirrors, and bold contemporary art adding unique character. Pro tip: Splurge on a suite for the butler service, it’s a game changer when you’re too comfortable to crawl out from under your duvet. And then there are the details. A pillow menu for picky sleepers. Bathtubs deep enough to drown out stress. Oh, and those tiny soap bars no one ever finishes? Here, they’re reincarnated through the Soap for Hope program, turning humble leftovers into something impactful. Library Blu, the bar that makes weekday unwinding feel like small scale hedonism. The Leela is thoughtful, down to the tiniest luxury.

Culinary Jewel
In a city like Chennai, where standalone restaurants jostle to stand out amidst their Asian inspired menus, China XO doesn’t just hold a candle, it’s the whole chandelier. With its Cantonese focus, this fine dining spot serves dim sums so delicate, they practically float off the plate (but not before you devour them). Their set menus are also a godsend for those notoriously rushed working lunches when you want flavour without the fuss. If Indian cuisine is closer to your palate, though, make a reservation at ‘Jamavar’.
Trust me, their raan, a slow-cooked, spice-smothered leg of lamb and the dal Makhani are easily some of Chennai’s culinary crown jewels. I’ve dreamt about that dal, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. For the health-conscious (or, admittedly, those just trying to make up for that second helping of curry), the ‘Aujasya’ menu is refreshingly guilt-free without tasting, well, free of joy. Think millet pesarattu with three vibrant chutneys at breakfast or a light chicken broth with an ethereally poached 63-degree egg for dinner.
It’s health food, but not as you know it, thank you, nutritionist Ankita Jalori, for that revelation. Over breakfast, you might spot families recharging for a day ahead or well-heeled jet-setters chatting with the ever gracious staff, who doubled as my unofficial city guides. They knew exactly where the energy of Chennai was pulsing, be it the city’s eclectic music gigs or buzzy after-hours haunts. Yet, for all its sophistication, The Leela could stand to cater better to little ones, I noticed there’s little more than a menu tailored to tiny taste buds. Accessibility wise, Room 111 is a thoughtful space, though I’d love to see this inclusivity extended. It’s a palace, after all. Royals deserve options, don’t they?

Luxury With A Conscience
Almost 90% of the Platinum SEEM-rated property’s energy is sourced from their own renewable grids, think solar panels and whirring windmills. My favourite touch? An in house bottling plant that has glass bottles replacing the parade of plastic ones we’ve all come to ignore. It’s not all bound by walls, either. Beyond their eco-savvy operations, The Leela backs the Blue Cross of India, raising funds and providing support for animal welfare. It’s equal parts heart and hustle, proving that luxury doesn’t have to cost the Earth, it can help save it. This is a place you check into for the views but stay for the soul. Whether you’re here for business, a wedding, or that elusive weekend escape, there’s one thing I can promise: leaving will not be easy. How do I know? I’m counting the days till I return.
